Cyber Attacks On Retailers Make Online Shoppers Wary:

According to the 2016 KPMG Consumer Loss Barometer, in surveying 448 consumers, KPMG found that 19 per cent said they would stop shopping at a retailer that had been a victim of a cybersecurity hack, even if the company took the necessary steps to remediate the issue...

In addition to those who would abandon the retailer entirely, 33 per cent of the consumers indicated fears of further exposure of their personal information would prevent them from shopping at a breached retailer for at least three months. When asked which factors most likely contribute to a customer not returning - or delaying a return - to the store, consumers surveyed cited a lack of a solid plan to prevent further attacks as a top factor.

“Make no mistake, there is a lot at stake here for retailers,” said Mark Larson, KPMG’s National Line of Business Leader for Consumer Markets and Global and U.S. Sector Leader for Retail. “Consumers are clearly demanding that their information be protected and they’re going to let their wallets do the talking. Retailers that don’t make cyber security a strategic imperative are taking a big gamble.”

When you go into a retail establishment and use any type of payment card, your personal data connected to that payment card is stored on the retailers IT system -- somewhere -- and often in multiple places.

Furthermore, your personal data connected to that payment card might also be transmitted to other 3rd-parties electronically -- and it is stored there also.

Online or in-person, use of personal, digitally stored data poses some risk.

When it comes down to it, you might be a very conservative\careful person - handling all your digital affairs in the most secure manner possible, and still, in the end, get your identity stolen and\or finances wrecked.

When it strikes, it strikes like a lightning bolt...

LOL... a retailer that has been hacked is more likely to be safer 6 months after the hack than the typical retailer because of measures to close\fix the security lapses. So why abandon it completely ?

When I make a purchase online, it's always for digital content, I use a PayPal account, and not important data are given.
