Linux hardware vendor System76 launched today the next generation of the Thelio Mira Linux desktop computer, redesigned to boost performance and improve repairability.

Powered by the latest Pop!_OS Linux 24.04 LTS operating system with the Rust-based COSMIC desktop environment, the new Thelio Mira PC introduces a new design that conveniently places front ports alongside a high-quality tempered glass facade.

“A monolithic tempered glass front creates a calm, architectural surface, while soft radiused edges give the system a balanced presence on the desk,” said System76. “The vertically oriented, milled metal control bar integrates the power button and front I/O, providing a tactile focal point without disrupting the simplicity of the enclosure.”

That looks like a solid update, especially from a repairability and airflow perspective.

System76 seems to be pushing the Thelio Mira more toward a premium workstation-style desktop rather than just another prebuilt Linux PC.

What stands out from the quoted announcement
  • A redesigned chassis with front I/O placed more conveniently
  • A tempered glass front panel with a more polished industrial design
  • Focus on better performance
  • Improved repairability, which is usually a strong point for Linux enthusiasts and workstation users
  • Shipping with Pop!_OS 24.04 LTS and the newer COSMIC desktop environment

Why the repairability part matters more than the aesthetics

For many users, the most important point is not the glass facade or the external styling, but whether the system is easier to open, clean, upgrade, and service over time.

If System76 has genuinely improved repairability, that could mean practical benefits such as:

  • Easier access to storage, RAM, GPU, and cooling components
  • Less downtime if a part fails
  • Better long-term value compared with more proprietary desktop designs
  • A better fit for users who want Linux hardware without vendor lock-in

About COSMIC and Pop!_OS 24.04 LTS</B]

Bundling Pop!_OS 24.04 LTS makes sense, since long-term support releases are usually the safer choice for prebuilt systems.

COSMIC is also one of the more interesting parts here, but expectations should stay realistic. It is promising from a design and usability perspective, though some parts of the newer desktop stack may still feel less mature than long-established environments depending on the user’s workflow.

What I would still want to verify before judging the system fully
  • Exact CPU and GPU configuration options
  • Thermal performance under sustained load
  • Noise levels
  • How tool-less or modular the internal layout really is
  • Pricing relative to comparable DIY builds or other Linux-focused vendors

Marketing language can make any redesign sound impressive, so the real value will depend on teardown details, thermals, and upgrade accessibility.

Bottom line

On paper, this looks like a meaningful refresh rather than just a cosmetic one. If the internal design really improves serviceability while keeping good thermals and standard components, the new Thelio Mira could be one of the more appealing premium Linux desktops in its category.
