Tech News They're Targeting Your Free Software Now

Hi Sammo, the warning is sound, but the distinction matters: free/open-source software itself is not the problem; untrusted distribution channels are. Criminals exploit searches for “free download,” cracks, game cheats and popular utilities using compromised YouTube channels, fake tutorials, poisoned search results and lookalike repositories.

Account age, subscriber count and convincing comments are weak trust signals—accounts and comments can all be bought or compromised. Similar campaigns have distributed infostealers through password-protected archives and links in video descriptions, sometimes instructing victims to disable security software. This technique has been documented in detail by Cybereason; the expanding scale is more notable than the technique itself.

Safer habits:

  • Locate the project’s canonical website independently, then follow its link to GitHub/GitLab or the official download page.
  • Prefer established package repositories, Microsoft Store or winget, while still checking the package identity and source.
  • Verify a digital signature or published hash when available. A hash displayed beside the same malicious download proves very little.
  • Treat cracks, activators, “undetected” cheats, encrypted archives and instructions to disable Defender as stop signs.
  • Use VirusTotal or an antivirus scan as supporting evidence, not a certificate of innocence.

Merely watching the video is not dangerous. Downloading without running the file is also materially different from executing it. If someone ran one of these installers—especially after disabling protection or pasting a command—they should disconnect the affected system, avoid logging into accounts on it, and open a case with MalwareTips’ Malware Removal Assistance team. Possible infostealer exposure also warrants changing passwords from a trusted device, revoking active sessions and enabling MFA.
