Noob looking improve security and privacy/anonimity a bit.. Always start with my browsing habits , browser settings (NoScript, Adblock Plus, Disconnect, etc), Hardware/sw configs (using KIS, MBAM Pro & other s/w for on demand). Also, update regularly...

Question = Is the Tor portable browser or VPN's (eg: Private Internet Access...Cyberghost) any help and how does TOR differ from PIA? Is one preferable over the other/ ( won't even bother asking about Tails & Inverse Path).

Just a regular guy looking to surf without leaving crumbs or revealing personal info.

Also read this: "
I read this as a possibility: "We’ve been touting the benefits of third-party DNS servers for a while now, but one additional benefit that might be of interest is the ability to encrypt all of your DNS requests, further protecting you from anybody spying on you in the middle."
Is this helpful and how does one do this?

And them i hear about 'end to end encryption to avoid middleman attacks....how does a noob deal with this?

Someone responded to me (re: TOR & VPN) with the below answer,, suggesting it's all essentially worthless. So, why do tech sites still recommend them? Also heard using TOR now raises red flags with NSA, etc... Confused...

Thanks

TOR or any other proxy should never be thought of as a security measure. Proxies are ran by any one many of whom do not have your security as a interest. Once your on a proxy they can do any thing they want such as presenting you with a fake log in page for your bank or paypal ebay etc. These fake pages can not be detected by normal anti phishing tools or methods. Do not ever go any where where security is a concern while behind any form of proxy that you do not control. Running your own squid proxy caching or not can be a boost to your security by removing things such as advertisements from 3rd parties on web pages etc. But and i speak from experience here a proxy can cache a web page say the one for pnc bank. At this point a person with only moderate coding skills can now make that page send them your username and pass word or in the case of a online store credit card information. And the bad part is it will or can be made to still allow you to log in or purchase the item etc. You would never know it happened until it was far to late.

Proxies such as tor etc may have some small benefit to your anonymity but with the ability to finger print not only your browser but your os and even your computers hardware even that is questionable today. Even though in a server log it will show the proxies user agent or should web pages can use java script and other methods to gather information about your browser os screen res logged in user name video card even your real ip."

Hi! If you ever find a way to be anomalous on the internet and not leave any crumbs behind please let me know.
TOR is a good idea in theory, but I doubt if it works all that well. I tried this one time and it did full Facebook and some other sites.
If you're trying to get access to sites where you're not welcome, they will figure out you're using a VPN and not allow you access.
If you want to full around with a program, try this one. Very simple, but will slow you down at times! It's not free!

You sound like an advertiser, HMA has the worst products and their vpn does nothing except log and is really terrible, OP do not trust him,
Anyways, TOR is pretty anonymous nowadays but the feds and in alot of exit nodes IMHO and others agree too. I recommend a vpn with no logging and also forcing the tor browser to use 3 nodes at the minimum because by default it can do a SINGLE HOP if it is having issues which isnt very secure :/

Tor is really painfully slow and some websites block Tor connections. For the best browsing experience I think a VPN would be best, as for which VPN i think you have to do some research yourself, following all these online guides would more or less get you to the same spot because they have a lot of pain sponsors. Personally I've used Cyberghost and PureVPN, both of which have been great to me, there are also promo codes for cyberghost to get it on the cheap now.

Yeah I agree that vpn would be best in most cases but I also love abusing TOR to spam which is why its blocked on so many sites :/
Btw hanmin how fast is their services I was interested in their anti ddos addon its expensive but its ovh protection which is pretty decent except at ssdp :( I had the lizard folks shrek a server once that was on a ovh 10gbps dedicated overclocked 18core and all they even had the max ddos protection because they were a gameserver POOF Instantly taken down :/
I am not promoting or telling other to go dos or do illegal things I am only speaking for myself and out of educational purposes only

Their services are actually quite decent! I read a number of negative review around but to me they are quite good, as for the speed I can only tell that if you are VPNing from the same country as the server you chose then the speed is excellent. I used it over in China when I went there for my school trip and it worked perfectly fine! As for the speed I don't think I have enough data because our internet connection there was absolutely horrible so when I VPNed over it was slow (russian server if you're wondering), but it was decent because we still could load youtube videos and access our documents at google drive very efficiently. Also the 5 devices per plan is really great, shared the cost with me friends and we ended up only paying very little per month.

I find they are pretty decent I have tried them before the speeds are up there on being the best but not quite.
I personally only use vpn services that auto route connecting people to a server with the lowest usage for max speeds.
Whenever i use my vpn I always get a server and it seems like no ones is ever on it because im getting 60mpbs

I'm not Enemy of the State - so I don't use a VPN.

Of those I tried I liked CyberGhost and JonDoFox (paid).

I found JDF free essentially worthless due to extremely slow speed... but paid version is good.

Security-wise I think VPNs are adequate for "base-line" security - just like every other security solution; they have vulnerabilities and security holes too...

If you're trying to hide your activities from the NSA, FSB, MI5, etc - I'm fairly confident that a VPN is not nearly enough for you to remain hidden online for very long. Besides, if you know they are on you, then you should stay off the computer and run instead...

if your worried about people watching you, yo ucan use tor as people only wanna catch the drug dealers and pedophiles on that if your doing anything else people wont care, and tor is safe as it goes through about 3 nodes so nobody knows where yo ucome from and your ISP doesnt know what your doing either, do not use addons or login to stuff on tor it will basically just reveal who you are example

joe average wants to private on the internet so he downlaods tor but he also wants to check his email, so joe goes to gmail and types in his email Mod Edit (Don't post your or anyone else's mail in public) he thinks he is safe but hes not :( logging in to anything on tor will reveal your name and location aslong as you dnt log into anything, download anything or install plugins your fine, tor for basic browsing is fine, but u need plugins you need to login so you have a normal browser like firefox or chrome, and get extensions like adblock, blur, ghostery etc. this very website has 1 tracker called google analytics thats what blur is telling me.

all these people who say the NSA and other 3 letter agencies are watching people online is dumb they are not watching the normal person they are looking for like drug dealing sites like silk road and pedophile rings and terrorists you think they care if your surfing on porn sites etc, trust me if these agencies want to find you they will and tor wont stop it. people seem to forget that tor was developed by the military which is part of the goverment. so unless your doing really incriminating stuff on TOR your fine and just looking at pics on porn based websites is not gonna get you in trouble with the NSA,FBI or whoever. if your not a hacker, drug seller, pedophile or terrorist you should be fine on tor

REMEMBER THE BEST PRIVACY IS YOUR MIND - dnt go on dodgy sites offering free software etc just block them ive locked down my pc so hard as i cant trust myself anymore.

1. im using open dns to block all pornograpy which includes my ISP filter to
2. ive disabled safemode so i cannot bypass filters
3.ive even bought some superglue and gonna put aload in my reset button on my router

thats how bad my paranoia is atm but hey aslong as im safe im fine

I think you need professional help, no one should be that paranoid, unless you are hiding a dark secret. Or a secret service spy.

Going off-the-grid will feed your paranoia. You're being watched in towns and cities, by CCTV. Will be start wearing a mask or hooded top, to conceal your ID?

If I can't use add-ons and login to any site while using a VPN without compromising my privacy, then to me, the whole thing is completely pointless...

The goal is to be able surf "normally" - be able to download, enter sites, etc - anonymously... as opposed to just spectating on sites that require no login.

That's why I don't bother...

like i said signing into say google or faceboo kreveals your ip address real name and location the best thing is to use a normal browser with pricvacy extensions like adblock, ghostery, blur and https everywhere, u cant be 100% anonymous online if u want to log on to stuff i dnt use social media for the sole reason of tracking i also blocked every search engine so they dnt track me to and i use firefox
