I don't like laptops, they are like a half of the home PC for 200% price. Overheating, small screen and pretty uncomfortable. of course, if you are going to do some work stuff on that laptop - buy it. But for entertaiment I'd rather by the really good pocketbook, and enjoy lots of books :)

You know what? I agree. I am gearing to build a $2K+ gaming PC, and this thing is (in some ways) a diversion.

For me it's because I'm travelling for work and I find it a pain to manage my life while away on an iPhone. It's honestly a pain.

We'll see. I like the suggestion of getting a free/cheap used laptop. Thing is, I'd be worried WHY someone is giving it away you know. Like what kind of nastiness is on there. Guess I could have them re-format before I pick it up.

if you plan to save important data on this laptop you should think about replacing the HDD with a SSD (e.g. Samsung 2.5 inch SSD, if possible/compatible). HDDs have a very high risk of losing data if your laptop should fall down on the ground (head crash)......

Perhaps you can get a laptop for free (or nearly free) @JHomes :)..
Sadly we live in a World where millions of people throw away their old laptops & PCs because they do not have the knowledge to remedy one that is "slow" or has bloatware hogging their storage space.
All of my machines to date have been free..
I would spread the word to friends/family/colleagues that if they know someone that is going to throw away their old laptop, then you may be interested and would perhaps pay $50 for it.
This way everybody is a winner-
The person in question gets money for something that they were going to throw away..
You are able to contribute to recycling...
and for $200 you may end up with 4 laptops that you can "fix" and install different operating systems on :)
Logethica masterfully expressed something amazing which some here may have often thought to do, and that can begin as simplly as plugging in a power cord; and like frogboy, my response is also an enthusiastic Yes! As I write this, my wife's old Dell Inspiron (transported from the dimension of:eek: 2007) is plugged into, and charging from, the same power strip as the computer on which I'm typing.
It begins!:D

@JHomes, I think you may do very well with many of the computers your friends and family may wish to discard because of either their lack of interest or knowledge.o_O I have often thought back to an occasion when my sister had asked me to drop off her perfectly good desktop computer at the local computer shop simply because it wasn't operating fast enough for she and her husband. They had already replaced it with a new one. If I'd only known, then, half of what I've learned from MalwareTips, I might have ended up posting this from a very different computer, the one we gave away because no one else wanted it!;)
