im not great with computers in general so please bear with me.

im unable to download/install/run files from internet explorer:

around the last week of january 2014. microsoft security essentials had a window tab open with several virus and additional pop up box. ignored and closed. didnt download anything.

the download boxes open to either run/save file...selecting either leads to the same issue. if i choose the new file path or leave as default the files do not appear or selecting run. second window pops up and select run. then nothing. no file downloaded anywhere. tried renaming file and file extensions.

removed firewall. uninstalled conflicting av software. safe mode w/networking. cant download malicious software removal tool. cant get past step one in your malware removal forum. uninstalled/reinstalled adobe in safe mode w/networking. was able to install malwarebites and run. quarantined bugs from that scan. still having the same issues. cant install mcafee. reset internet options under security to default.

please let me know if there is anything i can do. thanks for your time.

Hi and welcome to the malwaretips.com forums!

I'm Kuttus and I am going to try to assist you with your problem. Please take note of the below:
  • I will start working on your malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for this issue on this machine!
  • The process is not instant. Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine is clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • If you don't know, stop and ask! Don't keep going on.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
  • Refrain from running self fixes as this will hinder the malware removal process.
  • It may prove beneficial if you print of the following instructions or save them to notepad as I post them.
Your security programs may give warnings for some of the tools I will ask you to use. Be assured, any links I give are safe.

Before we start:
Please be aware that removing malware is a potentially hazardous undertaking. I will take care not to knowingly suggest courses of action that might damage your computer. However it is impossible for me to foresee all interactions that may happen between the software on your computer and those we'll use to clear you of infection, and I cannot guarantee the safety of your system. It is possible that we might encounter situations where the only recourse is to re-format and re-install your operating system, or to necessitate you taking your computer to a repair shop.

Because of this, I advise you to backup any personal files and folders before you start.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Do you have any other Browser on this computer which have issues?

Try to install Google Chrome from this website

https://www.google.com/intl/en/chrome/browser/

-I tried to download from site...came up with the following error message "application cannot be started. contact the application vendor".
-Tried a second time with choosing Run, shows the file downloading to temp file, chose run again, and both dialog boxes close, no file installed.
-Tried a third time with choosing save, to desktop, runs, beeps, closes, no file installed.
Same thing happend when i tried to download firefox before.

STEP 1: Run a scan with Farbar Recovery Scan Tool

Please download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your desktop.

Note: You need to run the version compatibale with your system. If you are not sure which version applies to your system download both of them and try to run them.
Only one of them will run on your system, that will be the right version.

  • Double-click to run it. When the tool opens click Yes to disclaimer.
  • Press Scan button.
  • It will make a log (FRST.txt) in the same directory the tool is run. Please attach it to your reply.
  • The first time the tool is run, it makes also another log (Addition.txt). Please attach it to your reply.

Please run the following utility so that I can get a log of your system...
STEP 1 : Run a scan with Combofix
Please read and follow very carefully the below instructions

Download ComboFix from one of the following locations:

COMBOFIX DOWNLOAD LINK #1 (This link will automatically download Combofix on your computer)
COMBOFIX DOWNLOAD LINK #2 (This link will automatically download Combofix on your computer)
----------------------------------------------------------------
VERY IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

  • Close any open browsers.
  • Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before performing a scan. They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results".
  • WARNING: Combofix will disconnect your machine from the Internet as soon as it starts. Please do not attempt to re-connect your machine back to the Internet until Combofix has completely finished.
If there is no internet connection after running Combofix, then restart your computer to restore back your connection.
-----------------------------------------------------------------

How to run the Combofix scan :
  1. Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  2. Accept the disclaimer and allow to update if it asks
  3. When finished, it shall produce a log for you.
  4. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

Additional notes:

1. Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. Do not "re-run" Combofix. If you have a problem, reply back for further instructions.
3. If after the reboot you get errors about programms being marked for deletion then reboot, that will cure it.

Both sites fail to download with the following note "failed - virus scan failed". It never gave me the option to save to desktop, it just ran and showed a progress wheel at the bottom of the screen. i tried both sites, same results. no prompts or disclaimers either.

it was running but came back with an error message:

ComboFix has detected teh following real time scanner(s) to be active:
antivirus: McAfee Anti-Virus and Anti-Spyware
antispyware:McAfee Anti-Virus and Anti-Spyware
Antivirus and intrusion prevention programs are know to interfere with ComboFix's running. This may lead to unpredictable results or possible machine damage.
Please disable these scanners before clicking 'OK'

When i look in task manager and program and features, McAfee is not there.
