Not intended to promote Black face = zwarte piet or black Peter as it was called in Dutch (now transformed to multi coloured Peter). When blackface was deemed funny?
FYI I am partly of Suriname origin. I never felt it much (was called the 'adopted whitey' in the family), but most of my nephews from my mothers side felt seriously bad going to school when they were a kid from the day before Saint Nicolaus (the real Santa Claus) landed until the day after he left again.
Also living in a poor neighborhood (I am from 1958) kids only got an apple or a carrot as presents in that period and only some candy on Sinterklaas evening. So it was not as much celebrated on school as nowadays (kids getting expensive presents and teachers giving it more attention to deal with the anxiety of little kids), but still my nephews felt really bad at the time. So I can understand why it was changed, because for black kids it was not a kids-party as the conservatives claim in the Netherlands.
