Virtualization vs VM - Malware Testing.

Hello, guys.

It's been almost a week since I joined this great community. It's truly an amazing community, it is still growing, but it is amazing.

Now I've another question to ask. Since I read a post over my other thread, I've been thinking. Will virtualization like TimeFreeze allow me to test malware? I think it has more disadvantages than advantages, including that all my passwords/accounts will almost be certainly hacked. Notwithstanding I would be unable to upload videos/malware samples, due to the increased risk of getting hacked.

I personally cannot download a Windows 7 ISO with my highly unstable modem. You might've heard of me complaining about my modem quite often, that is because my ISP, once called, sends their repairmen 8 days later. Time Warner aren't the best ISP out here. And even while browsing, my internet sometimes get disconnected. Basically I cannot do anything, because it is a line error, and I am not a network administrator so I cannot repair my modem (which I doubt is also in need of repair).

So until my internet gets repaired, I'd be unable to download Windows & start testing. Is there any software that creates a virtual copy of my harddrive? I just want to have an ISO that can be installed on a VM, if not, then I at least want to know if virtualization works?

The best way to test malware is on an old machine which you don't use, malware in a virtual machine will behave differently and will also have a chance to seep into the host machine, and time freeze isn't enough because your stuff could get hacked that's not reversable (passwords from managers, etc.).

But I don't want to spend a thousand dollars on another machine. :-; Any other help?

How could it be hard for you to download a windows ISO... Why not use tools (like netants?) that can download files from time to time?

Yeah. I use a Windows XP iso. When I wrote the thread, my network was highly unstable.
