VMware Workstation Player 17.6.1 | 10 OCT 2024 | Build 24319023

can you just update 17.6.0 to 17.6.1 from VM app? Not running VMware today, I had a weird issue yesterday but I may start separate thread if I can't resolve it today...

I had issues previously while installing from the VMware app... so this time I just downloaded the installer from here CDS Repository - /build/mts/release/bora-24319023/publish/cds/vmw-desktop/ws/17.6.1/24319023/windows/core
Then unpack the archive.tar and you will get the installer.exe, after that manually installation... in my case, no issues so far

I didn't have time to respond / update yesterday. I opened VMware 17.6.0 | help | software updates -- it found 17.6.1 and said it could only update from app v17.6 or later, ok, so I hit [download & install] and it did update ok here on my win10. One of things it said specifically during install was about updating linux features (paraphrase). In VM_linux today...

Running VMw 17.6.1 aok and running Manjaro linux which I installed 3 or 4 days ago. I noticed tonight that I could copy & paste from Guest to Host and visa versa, and I thought I was isolated. I opened VM | Settings | Options | Guest Isolation and found that both copy & paste boxes were ENABLED! I don't know (or recall) if prior versions were default with this disabled, but 8 previous VMs created with v16 (or v15) have this disabled. I know that I did not Enable them in this linux VM. I may have forgotten but had been thinking disabled is default, so suggest you check if this isolation is important to you. And what is the "threat level" of having copy & paste enabled.

so I'm running 17.6.1 and I just happened to check for updates yesterday and it said "no updates" other than VMware_Tools which recently updated. User has to download this file, ie, VMw will not update itself from 17.6.1?

Well, in my case the option "check for updates" found the new version 17.6.2, just take a look to the screenshot below:

VMware Pro 17.6.2.png

If doesn't work for you then either waiting a few days or downloading manually from the link in post #26
I didn't found a download link from the homepage, it's might hidden for some reason...

BIG THANKS! checked again today Help | Software Updates and I now see the same as you. I recall in the past VMware updated smoothly without any hiccups.

Broadcom announced new VMware updates for Workstation Pro and Workstation Player under version 17.6.2. The update makes the former free for not just personal users but also commercial and educational users. It also fixes crashing and freezing issues on Windows 11 and Linux.

Users are now forced to log in and manually check Broadcom's website for updates, download the correct version, and install it themselves, making it frustrating for customers who expect a seamless experience.

"To update your VMware Workstation Pro, you'll need to manually download the latest installer from the Broadcom support portal. It's worth noting that this change has caused frustration among users, as it was implemented without prior notice," reads a post to the Broadcom community forums.

While VMware Workstation continues to function, this broken update system may cause users to miss important bug fixes or security patches, especially when it is not apparent that the automatic update feature is broken until you try to use it.

Broadcom has not yet issued a public statement or workaround for the issue, and BleepingComputer has confirmed it is still broken in VMware Workstation 17.6.3, the latest software version.

BleepingComputer contacted Broadcom with questions about the change but has not received a response.

yes this seems really confusing (at least for me fwiw) I have 17.6.3 build-24583834 and I get the same error shown in link when I hit Software Updates. Then to make it worse I start cycling from Broadcom support page to the next, and it's circular and I never get to download page or it wants me to login. I thought logins ended when Workstation went free. Is there a direct link to download page, or do you have to login somehow...
