(Note that the updater will take a while to recognise the update)

Don't believe so, the installer i used certainly gave you the option to opt out.
It appears the developer is struggling financially and did not want to ask for donations, hence why he has hooked up with AVG.

That's a bit weird. Could try and see if there are any name in the Uninstall Programs, area, if not try using Revo and see it that uninstalls it, if not I would have no idea.
