After 16 years of driving my beloved Hummer H3, I finally decided to get a new car, I went with an EV, and it is what I would describe as unreasonably amazing. It is crazy how much automotive tech has advanced in the last 16 years, and it is easy for me to completely appreciate all of the hard work and engineering that was put into developing and producing this kind of amazing tech. I stopped by QuikTrip the other day and thought "I might as well top off my gas", but quickly realized that it was not necessary :). It was then that I thought about a new tag line for our software... "Unreasonably Effective" ;).

Which EV did you buy?

Currently Diesel, I get around 500 miles for a tank but might be changing it up as service/MOT started costing me around £400 each time recently despite 42K on the clock but it is 9 years old. I drive a biggish car but given current infostructure for EVs, I'd probably go petrol or self charging hybrid for whatever I get next.

Blazer EV, it is like driving a spaceship and the torque is instant. Gracie is usually with me so I cannot drive fast that often, but when I do it is amazing. They have some really good deals on the Blazer EV right now because no one is buying them. When most people think of EV's, the only thing they think of is a Tesla. Tesla's are great as well, especially the Auto Pilot which is currently ahead of the Chevrolet Super Cruise. I almost went with a Tesla, but I figured if I was going to buy a new car, I wanted to drive it myself, not have the computer drive it. I think in 2-3 years autonomous driving will be where it needs to be, then I will start using Super Cruise or Auto Pilot. Here are some pics, it is not actually quite that purple in person, it is the Galaxy Grey... I guess the iPhones add 25% purple or something.

BTW, here is my old car... if anyone wants to buy it, let me know ;).

Just a web search photo rather than my actual car but I have this exact one currently. Not very cool, I know but tons of room and pretty comfy. Anyway, reliable albeit with spongy suspension as made for better French roads so something different when I get around to it.

Nice, not too expensive with a good range. I would never buy a Tesla, from what I read the engineering is top notch but the reliability is horrible.

Yeah, you can get one for pretty much the same price as the ICE equivalent, after rebates and incentives. I will also save a total of $2,200 per year on gasoline because my H3 only got 13 MPG, so it was a total no-brainer for me. It looks like most of the EV's are coming down in price because the market is saturated, so there are amazing discounts right now. Basically, everyone who wanted an EV has already bought one, so now they have to lower the price to entice more people into considering them. I actually think the market is going to get a little better yet over the next 2-4 months. And once Tesla releases an even more affordable car, who knows what is going to happen ;).

well I don't know about... I leased a Tesla 3 for years, turned it in June. I miss it. Great car. Best driving / handling car I ever drove, and I've owned Lexus, Acura, BMW, Mercedes, Subaru STi (well STi was a great handling car) My wife has a Tesla Y (she let's me drive every once in a while). My first car was VW Bug. Hopefully Tesla will come out with a lower cost model in 2025 and it's on my shopping list.
PS I have used the post April 2024 Tesla self driving software update, and I'm amazed how good it is.

Not saying that they are not fun to drive or people shouldn't love them, just saying the reliability isn't the greatest, if that matters to anyone. Thats all, thats it.:p

1979 Ford F100 (Longbed) w/ 300 Inline 6. I've got about $6,000 into it at the moment. Some of the significant upgrades were a new steering box and a transmission rebuild. Everything else put into it was just replacing worn parts. Everything electrical on the truck works as well (all guages, lights, and on) for it being a 45 year old truck, gas mileage doesn't really matter to me. I simply use it for work and hauling things. There's a reason why the 300 I6 is called the "unkillable engine). I was raised up around these trucks, my grandfather had a 1978 Ford F150 that he had new from the dealership and it just kept on going. I prefer 70s-80s trucks with the absolute cutoff being 1994.

You'll never see me in any sort of EV, no matter how many miles it can go. If we're talking about the nonsense "CyberTruck" I'll pass every single time. I'll admit that they do look cool and futuristic (while being something I drew in kindergarten) the reliability and the ability to do "truck stuff" are non-existant.

From the J.D. Power study... does this sound familiar? ;). The only way to fix this, as we all know, is to reduce the number of unwanted alerts as much as possible.
  • Annoyance with driver assistance alerts grows over time: The number of problems related to driver assistance system alerts has increased between the 90-day ownership period and the three-year ownership period. “Many would think that after three years, owners would become used to the alerts on their vehicle,” Hanley said. “However, that is not the case. Increased problem levels are experienced across multiple driver assistance features including, but not limited to, lane departure warning/lane keeping assistance and forward collision warning/automatic emergency braking.”

In the context of Tesla, or the one I leased and my wife's current Y, I have no idea what you mean by "reliability." We recharge in our garage, always ready to go, always do go, have not had problems taking longer trips... Battery supposedly lasts 8 to 10 years. What's the reliability factor? (other than I did read something about possible issue colder weather).

PS I drove a Toyota Tacoma 4-wheel drive pickup truck manual transmission for 20 years. At 20 it started it have issues not easily pinpointed or fixed and sold it or traded it in (don't recall).
