Well, as already mentioned, you have to try it out yourself, there are all sorts of alternatives.

But The free alternatives which i use for my netbook which has only 2 GB of RAM & Win 7 32-bit -

Windows defender (real-time)
Malwarebytes Anti-malware (On demand)
Malwarebytes Anti-exploit (Free, browsers only)

Plus, Disable Autorun for all (removable + Non-removable) & ABP or uBlock for ad-blocking.

Most important of all - Safe browsing & self awareness.

Emsisoft
Eset
Symantec
Dr.Web
Webroot
Panda
:)

cons:
Emsisoft: i use it for 1 year ( a little buggy, slow down boot time) 150MB Ram, heavy update
Eset: i use it 4 years last on those years eset bb is very weak anf after 6 month my pc go slow...
Symantec: good software but low detection rate and not good company ...
Dr.Web: great av but very heavy (400MB size and need 300 MB Ram) but if u have enough ram and high internet speed u can work with it :)
Webroot: small, fast, but not protect u well when u are offline
Panda: same as Webroot :D

I have really only used 3 Security suites over the last 15 years or so.
Kaspersky Internet Security
ESET Smart Security
Emsisoft Internet Security

First depending on the laptop specs you should have no problem running any of these
ESET Smart Security has always been a very good program although some bugs with version 9.Especially uninstallation.I still have that running on a older desktop.Great protection and not much system impact.
I am presently using Emsisoft Internet Security on 2 Laptops. The newer version have less frequent updates than in the past and also much less system impact than previous versions.Great protection if you ask me.Avast was nice enough to give me a license for Avast Internet Security 2016 to give it a try and it is surprisingly good.Surpisingly good because I have never used AIS.No real system impact and some nice features as well as good protection.

I think my question here is why an alternative to KIS? I am running it on an old dual core machine without any problems and in my opinion out of all the choices in the poll KIS provides the best protection/detection

For the sake of the poll my suggestion would be to try Emsisoft Internet Security 11 as I am pretty happy with version 11 running on two laptops

For starters, an alternative to Kaspersky Internet Security would be another Internet Security Suite to keep it comparable, especially for a Poll options.

What other security have you previously tried before?

And what operating system will it be run on?

Good choice.

When i tried it years ago for my laptop, it didn't work well. It hanged, reported a lot of false positives.
But I gather from the posts here above that EIS 11 improved a lot over the years

Hope it works smoothly with yours...:)

KIS' distinguishing characteristic, in my opinion, is its extended configuration capabilities in comparison to other market-leading Internet Security packages, such as Norton.
In my opinion, one of the few competing Internet Security software vendors that can offer that key feature of customizability is Emsisoft, with their Emsisoft Internet Security product.

CIS and ESET is alternative for KIS because all three of them have tons of settings. Unlike Emsisoft, it design to be install and forget right out the box and minimum settings to mess around really.
