Check out this: Test Linux distros online - DistroSea

Gives you a good idea about different distros out there.

You cannot go wrong with a mainstream distro in terms of security updates and levels of unofficial support via forums or other social platforms. You can, within reason , add anything you would like to a distro.

I would highly recommend having a flash drive with more than 4GB available to really test drive a distro on your hardware. There are things that might need to be ironed out or it might be smooth sailing.

If you want a fun read about Linux distros, check out Dedoimedo - the guy is a riot.

fwiw, I stepped away from fedora 41 for a few days, returned this evening and it had 97 system updates. Not a big deal, except after a reboot (in VMware) the reboot balked aka froze on a black screen and never went to login! But fedora is robust and chatgpt suggested do x then y, and all good again. that was my first fedora snafu, and overall very minor.

Decided to give Manjaro a try on my spare laptop since @TuxTalk says it's good. A little diversion for the evening.

Security wise it uses ufw firewall and apparmor. And it support snaps, so I uninstalled firefox, and installed the snap version, which has better security: apparmor + seccomp + containment.

I was a bit disappointed to find only 3 updates. It's Nov 24 now and the iso release date was on Oct 1st. There should be more than 3. That's a bad sign. Patches must be provided quickly.

Back to Fedora I go.

f-e-d-o--r---a!! yes! but Manjaro is a distro I keep on the side ready to go -- like it (not that my opinion re linux distros means anything).
PS fedora did NOT have an update for me this morning! a first.

As soon as you run Manjaro it updates, no need to worry about the iso build date.

* but currently not running any Linux Distro, i am quite happy with Windows 11 Enterprise LTSC.

I am using linux mint (cinnamon) and I am very satisfied with it. It works great, it is fast, secure, full of necessary stuff, very stable, customizable etc. I would recommend this to anyone. Zorin is a good alternative, Debian and probably many more but i can`t remember right now.
In 2024 started with Zorin and liked it (I had used CentOS some years ago) then also tried MX-Linux & Manjaro liked & still have them, but been running fedora w/Gnome -- rock solid for me. fedora has become my daily driver. (fwiw)

I am using Fedora also as my daily machine. Nothing to complain about. Fast patching - updates available almost every day. Has SELINUX, better than Apparmor because it comes pre-setup with rules whereas Apparmor needs the user to make profiles for every individual app he uses. Many people take one look and see many apprarmor profiles on the machine; little do they know that almost all of them are 'stubs' and are 'unconfined' profiles. That's the configuration for all Ubuntu derived distro's.

PS. The snap version of firefox comes with an apparmor profile. But the last one I looked at allows too many things and was made for an older firefox which uses around 15 things from /bin. It makes me uncomfortable. So I recommend uninstalling the snap version of firefox and install the deb version. Then use Firejail to protect it.
