I am currently running Microsoft Defender with Hard_Configurator. Wanted to add a third party scanner to scan every 2-3 months. I haven't been upto date with performance of different companies. Previously I used to have Emsisoft Emergency Kit. Which one are still good in 2026?

Favorites still are EEK and ESET Online Scanner because they auto-update and have a quick scan option. Norton Power Eraser auto-updates, but it doesn't seem to have a quick scan option. Kaspersky may be fantastic, but I need to download updates manually.

I have all these third-party scanners such as AdwCleaner, Avira PC Cleaner, Emsisoft Emergency Kit (EEK), ESET Online Scanner, Hitman Pro, HouseCall (Trend Micro), Kaspersky Virus Removal Tool, Malwarebytes, Norton Power Eraser (will be or has been discontinued), Orion Malware Cleaner, Panda Cloud Cleaner, RogueKiller, Sophos Scan and Clean, SUPERAntiSpyware Free, Zemana AntiMalware (practically dead). Although I have all these third-party scanners, it is very rare that I use any of them. Wait, a member and malware tester will appear, perhaps, who may know which scanner is best for you that fits the current scenario in 2026. (y)Good luck! Stay safe! ;)

Your combination of Defender with Hard_Configurator already provides you with first‑class protection. To complement it with an on‑demand scanner, most specialists recommend portable tools such as Emsisoft Emergency Kit (still active and free), Kaspersky Virus Removal Tool, Malwarebytes Free, and the ESET Online Scanner. These are reliable second‑opinion scanners you can run occasionally without permanent installation. With your current setup and one of these on‑demand tools, you are aligned with what the community considers a secure and balanced scheme. You can also find additional insights from other users in this thread that may help guide your choice. 🔒🛡️🧭

Too much software #1 and most are either DOA or EOL or stuck behind a registration/license #2.

I use KVRT when I get a bit paranoid , I use to use ESET scanner but then I reup my sub for ESET suite so no longer needed. Nothing else.

Yes! Too much software. As I said, I hardly use it anymore. The reason I stopped using on-demand scanners was because they never found anything. Since I use the hardened system + Kaspersky + Standard Account, these tools are unnecessary, at least for me. :)

Which version of Windows do you have? I actually would like to try Avira Pc Cleaner even tho it's long dead, but it cant run on my system anymore.

Such stupidity by bugdefender. Solve ur own bugs first.
I can excuse B if the reason is avoiding running two AVs simultaneously, when the user forgets to disable B real-time protection before starting secondary scanner on-deman scan.

All the on-demand scanners around have been mentioned. I used Norton Power Eraser once in a blue moon, which was my favorite for aggressive heuristics, but it's being discontinued. I don't run secondary scanners on my own system anymore.

My advice is to put more attention towards proactive defenses against malware instead. Taking every reasonable measure against getting infected in the first place will do a lot for peace of mind. Prevention is the best medicine.

Also, don't let paranoia get the best of you.
