Wikipedia will no longer allow editors to write or rewrite articles using AI. The update, which was added to Wikipedia’s guidelines late last week, cites the tendency for AI-written articles to violate “several of Wikipedia’s core content policies” as the reason for the ban.

The change applies to the English version of Wikipedia and will still allow editors to use AI in certain scenarios. That includes using large language models to “suggest basic copyedits” to their writing, but only if it “does not introduce content of its own.” Editors can also use AI to translate articles from another language’s Wikipedia into English. However, they still must follow the site’s rules on LLM-assisted translations, which require editors to have enough knowledge of the original language to confirm the accuracy of the translation.

There is a massive irony in Wikipedia’s new rule banning AI-generated articles.

Wikipedia just restricted editors from using AI to write or rewrite content because AI hallucinations take too long to fact-check. But guess how they vet those posts? With AI.

Every edit is instantly scanned by machine learning bots (like ClueBot NG) that automatically catch and revert bad edits in seconds.

Basically, Wikipedia trusts AI to be the "bouncer" enforcing the rules, but completely bans it from being the "author."

Wikipedia not really saints though; they have many controversies also. Besides, their revenue is over $100 million every year.

Me too, but a large percentage of free software websites dispaly "asking for donation"; this is not considered profit-making as with displaying ads or selling visitors data.

best guess, before ChatGPT I'd read Wikipedia occasionally, must have donated couple of bucks -- they never forget.

They also recently signed deals with AI companies, most likely getting revenue from them for content access (or bandwidth costs). It's not clear whether that revenue will replace donations lost from the declining user base.

It is the new trend after selling browsing data for ad companies; I doubt anyone is not doing.

If you search for something on Wikipedia,their search engine is added to Chrome.
I have no idea if the same thing happens in other Chromium-based browsers, even if the search engine is disabled.
I’ve blocked this feature using one of my rules.

Thanks for pointing that out.
I’ve also added two rules; while I can’t verify them for x.com, they work for YouTube.
If any forum members are interested, they’re posted in post #24 of my Security Configuration.

I also checked X.com, and the rule,which can be converted from uBoL to a DNR rule in YAML format,works.
If any other forum members are aware of other websites not listed in my post #24 that install search engines in Chrome, please let me know.

IMO there is a large difference between AI writing content & AI & checking it, in the distant past a secretary will have typed & checked a letter for spelling etc but the content did not come from the secretary, I feel its the correct way around in this case with Wikipedia.
