Of course I was rather panicky about it and thought 'what have I done??!!'. I took it to the repair shop, where it was found that the power supply inside had failed. That has now been replaced and the shop have scanned it with a variety of tools and said no viruses found. It is now working much better and back to the usual quick speed.
