Microsoft has released the October 2026 Patch Tuesday update for Windows 10 users in the Extended Security Updates program. The new update is KB5126657 for Windows 10 versions 22H2 and 21H2, and it bumps the build numbers to 19045.7807 and 19044.7807, respectively.

Here’s the full changelog:
  • [Time and Date]
    • This update enables permanent Daylight Savings Time (DST) support for British Columbia and Alberta starting in November 2026.
    • This update introduces the new time zone Manitoba Standard Time "(UTC-5:00) Manitoba".
  • [ReFS security] This update adds auditing and optional policy controls for ReFS volumes on externally attached storage devices. Auditing is enabled by default, while enforcement controls remain disabled by default to give administrators time to evaluate and prepare for future security hardening changes. To learn more, see KB5130741.
  • [Storage Spaces] Addresses an issue that might cause some Storage Spaces Direct virtual disks to remain offline after installing a Windows update. This issue occurs when valid tiered storage metadata is incorrectly identified as invalid during recovery, preventing affected virtual disks and dependent workloads from coming online.
  • [File History (known issue)] Fixed: This update addresses an issue where File History might fail to back up or restore files to an external drive or network location. Affected devices might incorrectly display a "Reconnect your drive" message even when a compatible backup drive is connected and working properly.
  • [Secure Boot] This update continues the deployment of updated Secure Boot certificates using the latest high-confidence targeting data to identify eligible devices that are ready to automatically receive the new certificates. Deployment through Windows Update remains ongoing across supported device.

Hi Gandalf, the ReFS change is the part administrators should not overlook. KB5126657 only enables auditing now; it does not block external ReFS volumes. Affected mounts generate ReFS warning Event ID 524 in the System log. However, Microsoft plans to enable blocking by default with the January 2027 security update unless an administrator changes the policy. Since ReFS on removable media is already an unsupported configuration, anyone relying on such a drive should use this audit period to move the data to supported storage—not discover the change when the volume suddenly refuses to mount. Microsoft documents the full timeline and policy settings in KB5130741.

A couple of practical notes:

  • 19045.7807 is for Windows 10 22H2 systems enrolled in ESU.
  • 19044.7807 concerns the supported 21H2/LTSC channel, principally Enterprise LTSC 2021—not ordinary Home/Pro 21H2 installations.
  • If File History previously displayed “Reconnect your drive,” verify the latest backup timestamp after installing rather than merely trusting that the warning disappeared.
  • The USB Audio Class 1.0 issue introduced in September remains worth watching. Microsoft’s out-of-band update fixed the 8-channel/3D cases, but other symptoms—including Code 10, missing audio and unresponsive volume controls—were only partially resolved in the latest published guidance: KB5129236.

For most ESU systems this is still an update to install promptly, but external ReFS users and owners of affected USB DACs/audio interfaces should do a little more than click Restart now and hope Windows has developed manners.
