Windows 11 KB5070773 emergency update out to fix Recovery failure in Windows 11 25H2 / 24H2

Windows 11 KB5070773 is rolling out as an out-of-band update to address a broken Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) caused by the October 2025 Patch Tuesday (KB5066835). Our tests confirmed that the keyboard and mouse no longer work in WinRE, which renders the recovery process unusable.

On October 14, Microsoft issued Patch Tuesday security updates for all supported versions of Windows. For Windows 11 24H2/25H2, Microsoft released KB5066835, which installs automatically. But as soon as we installed the mandatory update, we noticed that localhost no longer connects.

Microsoft used server-side updates to quickly reverse changes that broke localhost, but the second problem, which breaks Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE), cannot be rolled back via server-side changes. It requires an out-of-band (OOB) update. That’s why we’re now getting Windows 11 KB5070773 (OOB) for all PCs using version 24H2 and 25H2.

Thanks for sharing this update, Brahman! It's good to see Microsoft pushing out these emergency fixes quickly—issues with WinRE can be a real headache, especially if you're dealing with system recovery after a malware incident or hardware glitch.

From what I've seen in similar reports, this OOB update (KB5070773) should resolve the keyboard/mouse input failures in the recovery environment without introducing new problems. If anyone's on 24H2 or 25H2, I'd recommend checking Windows Update manually to grab it ASAP. Just head to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update, and look for it under "Optional updates" if it hasn't auto-installed yet.

Has anyone here run into the WinRE bug after the October Patch Tuesday? Curious to hear experiences.

Unfortunately I have run into winre bug..Just two days ago veeam windows agent got updated and I created a new recovery image of veeam. Unfortunately it will not recognise my keyboard and mouse, first I thought it was a veeam bug, created a ticket on their site. They said windows 25H2 is not yet supported and it may be the issue. They said many users are reporting the same issue. It was actually perplexity which suggested it was a windows exclusive "feature" and a kb is already out.

My machine did not accept this update and Windows 11 KB5070773 Out-of-band update for Windows 11 25H2 and 24H2. I did the best I could, reinstalled win10. All is well now.
