Windows updates guide telling which ones to avoid--out there?

I have heard that many Windows updates are unnecessary or even bad. I know Microsoft has tried to foist on me software I didn't want or need through updates.

Does somebody maintain a listing that sorts out the good, the bad, and the superfluous in Windows updates?
