well I would have said Zorin Core Pro 17.2 but then for reasons that are sorta murky in my mind, I attempted to install xfce4 (some research first -- many said sure...) downloaded ok, then rebooted and Zorin never opened again. Plus extra bad night, I did NOT make a VMware snapshot first. Obviously brain-dead last night. I can "fix" this but may try different distro. I see MX-Linux is no. 1 and its default DE is xfce. Last night was a reinforced learning experience. Breaking linux in a VM is not really SO bad, just sad.

MXLinux is nice but not for me, too many bloatware ( in my opinion ) and im not a big fan of Debian Distro.

My linux is very rusty, but my experience with Debian is more limited than with some others. MX-Linux is on hold for now, but a maybe. Obviously a lot of folks like it (or use it).

so you're running Fedora 40? The first time I tried it, it seemed not to install correctly, but I may try again...

I did send Zorin support an email (their webmail form) about 12 hours ago and no reply yet about my experience with xfce4 and requesting the link for Pro 17.2 download and no reply yet. a tad annoying since I did pay for Pro twice over the past 18 months. I was "happy" to pay for good product, but then also expect timely support. The value diminishes IMO absent support. It's not like I bug them, ie, my first support request...

I run the KDE version

.

Runs perfect. Just changed the Firewall GUI to Info Center - Plasma Firewall

This is like GUFW for Ubuntu.

Such a shame , since you are a pro user. Expect some support.
Fedora userbase is quite friendly and give support.

You can try it, it's fast, I used the KDE version, it's a bit like stock Debian on steroids

happy days are here again! ie new happy days. I installed MX-Linux 23.4 xfce 4.18 into VMware, and install was a good experience, mini linux refresher. MX has a nice linux feel and running nicely fast. So I'm now thinking my borked Zorin mis-step was for the best. :D The MX install was not perfect, I have a Corsair mechanical keyboard and MX is not listing that device, but blips like this are to be expected for anyone who has ever run linux. Almost part of its charm... and there is an answer for this issue. I just have to find it. (haven't started looking yet...) And I have room to try Fedora again. Also (fwiw) I was considering Ubuntu which says to install it with VirtualBox -- harmonized to be automatic, so I started to install VB and got a scary popup on hardware Host about VB needing to muck-around with Host Network adapters (or whatever) and was not ready to go down that road until I understood what it was doing and possible unintended consequences. Ubuntu has 5-page howto about installing with VB, and never mentioned the Network modification. Surprises are not always good. MX & VMware are happy together so far. :D

KDE Update to 6.1.5
Quick update to keep things accurate. fwiw Zorin folks did email me with a link to DL 17.2. I am delaying the Zorin re-install, as I am really enjoying MX-Linux. MX is much more of a linux experience (compared to Zorin) based on my recollections of running linux in the more remote past. Definitely fun! MX is starting to feel familiar. Keyboard easily fixed. Also time for me to learn linux a level or two more deeply than I took it in the past.

yes strong possibility after win10 EOL -- this hardware is aging at about +8 years but is still very solid. In 2016-17 this was on the high-end side and I gave it lots of RAM. I think it has another 8 years in it, but not with win11 & beyond.

fav app... running MX, Brave was not installed, so I installed it using mxpi. I had previously installed firejail. firejail firefox works fine and I do see brave firejail profiles in /etc. so I ran firejail brave and terminal ends with "error no suitable brave executable found" but brave does run without firejail. so I'm thinking some config error in brave profile perhaps pointing to wrong path, so I opened firejail config wizard and created a new profile for brave and tried again firejail brave and get the same error. At this point I'm sorta clueless but assume cmd used a profile that was already in /etc and its config is wrong. Unclear what to do next other than not run brave. I don't need to do a lot of things in linux but I do want linux to be secure. I did already install apparmor and I think it is running ok. Any insight into firejail brave? (can we discuss various app questions in this thread? I'm not seeing necessity to create a new thread for this??)
