10 Rules to Avoid Online Scams

Here are 10 practical safety rules to help you avoid malware, online shopping scams, crypto scams, and other online fraud. Each tip includes a quick “if you already got hit” action.

  1. Stop and verify before you click, log in, download, or pay.

    warning sign

Most scams win by creating urgency. Verify using a trusted method: type the website address yourself, use the official app, or call a known number (not the one in the message).

If you already clicked: close the page, do not enter passwords, and run a malware scan.

  2. Keep your operating system, browser, and apps updated.

    updates guide

Updates patch security holes used by malware and malicious ads. Turn on automatic updates where possible.

If you saw a scary “update now” pop-up: close it and update only through your device settings or the official app store.

  3. Use layered protection: antivirus plus an ad blocker.

    shield guide

Antivirus helps block malware. An ad blocker reduces scam redirects, phishing pages, and malvertising.

If your browser is acting weird: remove unknown extensions, reset the browser, then run a full scan.

  4. Install apps, software, and extensions only from official sources.

    install guide

Avoid cracked software, “keygens,” and random downloads. During installs, choose Custom/Advanced and decline bundled offers you do not recognize.

If you already installed something suspicious: uninstall it, restart, and scan again.

  5. Treat links and attachments as untrusted by default.

    cursor sign

Phishing often impersonates delivery services, banks, and popular brands. If it is unexpected, do not open attachments or log in through the message.

If you entered credentials: change the password immediately and enable 2FA.

  6. Shop safely: research the store, then pay with protection.

    trojan horse

Be cautious with brand-new stores, “closing sale” stories, and prices that make no sense. Prefer credit cards or PayPal for dispute options. Avoid wire transfers, gift cards, and crypto payments.

If you already paid: contact your card issuer or PayPal quickly to dispute the transaction.

  7. Crypto rule: never pay a “fee” to withdraw or recover money.

    lock sign

Common patterns include fake profits, then “tax,” “gas,” or “verification” fees. Another is a “recovery agent” who demands upfront crypto.

If you already sent crypto: stop paying, save evidence (wallet addresses, TXIDs, chats), and report the scam to the platform used.

  8. Secure your accounts with unique passwords and 2FA (start with email).

    lock sign

Use a password manager and unique passwords for every account. Enable 2FA using an authenticator app when possible.

If you suspect an account takeover: change passwords, sign out of all devices, and review recent logins and recovery settings.

  9. Back up important files and keep one backup offline.

    backup sign

Backups protect you from ransomware and device failure. Keep at least one backup on an external drive that is not always connected.

If you suspect infection: do not connect backup drives until the system is clean.

  10. If you think you are a victim: stop losses, document evidence, and escalate fast.

    warning sign

Move quickly. Speed matters for disputes, account recovery, and limiting damage.

    • Stop payments and contact: do not send more money or respond to the scammer.
    • Call your bank or card issuer: block transactions, replace the card if needed, and start a dispute or chargeback.
    • Secure your email first: change the email password, enable 2FA, and remove unfamiliar recovery options.
    • Secure other accounts: change passwords, enable 2FA, and log out of all sessions.
    • Scan your device: remove suspicious apps or extensions, then run a full malware scan.
    • Save evidence: screenshots, emails, order pages, tracking pages, wallet addresses, TXIDs, and chat logs.
    • Report it: to the payment provider, marketplace, social platform, exchange, or wallet service involved.

These rules are intentionally simple. Most online losses happen when decisions are rushed. Slow down, verify independently, and use payment methods and account controls that give you recourse.

  1. Used the malwarebytes and when rebooted it said that c:\PROGRA~3\rilado.dat could not be found or something to that degree

    • This is because the FBI virus made an entry in your registry to run a file at boot time and this file does not exist anymore since malwarebytes removed it.
You may perform a search of ‘rilado.dat’ (for your case) in your registry and delete the associated key that is calling to run this file.

  2. Thank you so much. this really helped. the virus popped up las nigh and idk what to do but i followed ur instructions and now my laptop is working just fine.

  3. Thank you, running Malwarebytes now, your information seems to have solved my problem, again thank you.

  4. Thank you thank you thank you! The idiots that put this stuff out there make me curse humanity… People like you who offer so much help and advice to strangers restore my faith in it. Thank you again. I’m running my full system scan now, and hopefully that will be the end of that. I’ll be more diligent with my virus scans from now on.

  5. Thank you for posting this page. I did receive this virus on my computer and this page has been a huge help. Thanks again!!

  6. A few months back we got this FBI malware. I am not sure of all that I did but I was able to scan and delete the malware. Since then I noticed that most of the windows updates fail. The fact is that any program that uses the windows installer fails to install. We use Comodo Internet Security and it finds a hidden root kit at {53f5630d-b6bf-11d0-94f2-00a0c91efb8b} but fails to clean it. I have navigated to the key, but when i click it displays access denied. Because I have been having problems with windows installer I went to windows\system32 and tried to view the properties/security of the msiexec.exe and given can’t open access control editor. invalid value for registry.
    I tried sfc/scannow and rebooted.
I tried re registering the msiexec.exe

at this point I am lost.

  7. Thanks a lot!! I’ve been able to get back onto my laptop and everything seems to be in working order after I did the system restore but I was wondering whether the system restore (to a previous time and date before I was infected) would get rid of the virus completely as I am using my eset NOD32 ANTIVIRUS 5 software and running a full computer scan but I don’t know if it will pick up any extra malicious software, as I did a quick search and people seem to be very divided on whether a system reboot will or will not get rid of the virus. Some say it works all the time for them and others say that it doesn’t normally work and may in fact end up infecting my system restore files. I’m not sure what works. The step by step instructions were very useful by the way, especially since I hadn’t done any of the claims against me which led me to believe it was a virus immediately! Again, THANKS!!!

  8. Thanks for the step by steps. That’ll teach me to follow links friends on facebook send me without reactivating noscript.

After I did a system restore and got back in, I ran a Malwarebytes scan and it’s showing zero malicious programs. A Sophos virus scan is also showing nothing. Is this unusual? Can I trust it that I’m really safe? Or can this thing hide?

I’m doing a MWB full scan now, just in case.

Man, I’m annoyed at myself. I’m usually a safe browser, but I let it slip for one second and suddenly my laptop shoots craps.

Immediatly pops up with this stupid fake fbi crap. Someone please help me!!!

  12. The FBI warning pops up in safe mode, safe mode command prompt and safe mode with networking, how do I still get rid of it with this happening?

The module could not be found

Has anyone seen this before? Can anyone help me find how to get this message to not appear?

Do you recommend I run Hitman still?

    Thanks for any help

    • Hello John,
Can you please run a scan with the following tools:
STEP 1: Run a scan with RogueKiller

      1. Download ESET Online Scanner utility.
ESET Online Scanner Download Link (This link will automatically download ESET Online Scanner on your computer.)

The nflux.dll file is part of this infection, and is basically just a left over stat-up item, the file was removed however the registry key is still there and this is why you are seeing this prompt. To solve this ,you can use Malwarebytes StartupLite or Msconfig,to remove that startup entry.
      Stay safe!

  14. I just tried cleaning off a version of the FBI ransomware with Kickstart and it did not work. I have used Kickstart to clean other computers before, but this time it’s not working. I think this latest iteration of ransom ware may be modfying something in the flash drive’s boot sector to prevent Kickstart from booting as it should. It appears to start booting to Windows and then later flashes up the Hitman Pro screen and appears to do a fake scan. It doesn’t find anything. The computer then restarts back to the FBI ransom ware.

  15. I think this did the job, it appears to be gone from my computer. Thanks for sharing your knowledge and expert advice. I really do appreciate your help!!!
