Has Microsoft fixed the things you hated in Windows 8?

1. Boot to Start screen
Not everyone loves the Modern UI, especially on the desktop. The option to boot straight to the desktop (bizarrely hidden away in a Taskbar properties menu) was long overdue.

2. Restricted search
The way Windows 8’s default search gave results from apps alone was horribly frustrating. The new universal search menu is a huge improvement, delivering results for apps, settings, files and the web in a heartbeat.

3. Installing everything onto the Start screen
Windows 8’s habit of placing an icon for every app on the Start screen quickly led to cluttered, unmanageable Start screens. Now, icons are only added to the All Apps screen by default, allowing you to save the Start screen for the important stuff.

4. Different wallpapers for Start screen and desktop
The option to run your desktop wallpaper on the Start screen makes Windows 8.1 feel less like two different operating systems that have been crudely jammed together.

5. Only two tile sizes
The new larger tile size makes live data much more readable, while the option to reduce oft-used but inactive tiles – such as Store – to a tiny square means the Start screen doesn’t run and run.
