For me personally, Avast/AVG are the only solutions other than Panda that allow me to have an Antivirus without HTTP scanning. I want nothing to touch my internet connection. ESET and a few others allow you to disable HTTP scanning, but then you'd have an exclamation mark or warning that something is not right, so I like the fact that with Avast/AVG, I can uninstall that component entirely.
What are you using now?
Im using Eset. Was using Norton and I was so happy with it. I have no idea why I switched to Eset, but it seems i have a sweet spot for it.
I started to believe that using anything other than MD is a hassle.
Does this mean that it will not block web threats or slow down the connection if HTTP scanning is disabled?
It won't actively block them but if the file is infected, it would be caught after it's downloaded. That works the best for me because I have 0 interference on my connection so 0 slowdown or lag when loading webpages but I am still protected.
This is great because my only problem with Avast was that it blocked the sites I used (false alarms) and I thought the only way to get rid of that was to disable web protection completely.
I have always loved network protection but using MD for a while has spoiled me to some extent in this regard as browsing is the fastest with MD due to not having web protection but annoy me sometimes with other things in which it is slow. I'm using ESET now but there are times regarding browsing and even starting a download, I feel a slight delay. Even if HTTPS scanning for the browser is disabled, theoretically there should be a very small delay as all connections are always scanned by ESET or any AV with such feature.
Avast can be used by disabling web protection but in my experience, ESET is much faster than Avast at almost everything else. It seems ESET saves most files it scans into some sort of a permanent cache. So once something that is regularly used are scanned, almost nothing is ever slow again with ESET. Everything is instant. The cached items are rescanned automatically after every signature update.
I couldn't find a pattern for Avast's caching method. Sometimes randomly it halts an app launch for a second to scan including the default Windows Photos app. So even though its fast 7 out of 10 times, it's not as fast as ESET.
Yeah, the components are disabled only, not removed so size won't decrease. I hope they never remove the ability to disable components.I'm not sure, that's a good questionIt may be a bigger file size in case you upgrade, it will load from there into the app, without having to uninstall the free version to install the upgrade? I know at one time, is probably still the case, where the BD Antivirus Plus was the same install folder size as Total Security, so that if you upgraded from AV+ to Total, it would just unpack it from that folder.
Edit: The folder size may not change when we disable a feature, in case we enable it again, it will be easily re-accessed from the folder. We can probably confirm it by trying to run or load that feature, when its been disabled?

MD with either Symantec browser protection or Norton safe web; good protection, no noticeable delay.
That is where ESET excels, it has a whitelist feature where after a file is scanned, it won't be scanned again if the signature of that file hasn't changed. My only issue with it is it's HTTP scanner, if you disable it, you get an amber ESET icon alerting you that something is not right, messes with my OCD. II wish it had an option like Avast/AVG to completely remove a component which you don't want such as HTTP scanning not just disable it.
I would not disable Eset https scanning as this is one of the areas where Eset shines (web protection).

I haven't tried Symantec Browser Protection in more than a year. But back then, it had a performance impact, including high CPU usage. It has some IPS functionality which caused that delay and CPU usage. It's not a simple blacklist checking extension. It was also not possible to whitelist any site. I don't know if anything changed.
Norton Safe Web, shortly before Avast's acquisition, became a first-party blacklist checker. Before that, it could also block third-party malicious connections similar to Symantec Browser Protection, McAfee WebAdvisor, and Malwarebytes Browser Extension.
Yeah, that's true. But if I just disable HTTPS scanning for the browsers, I don't really notice any delay. Browsing seems normal. So I just do that.
Correct. It blocks a lot through its web protection. But on default settings, I immediately notice that MalwareTips and Google load slowly with ESET. In the past, I noticed immediate slowdowns for these two sites with Kaspersky.
Initially, I added these two sites to the exclusion list, but later added my browsers to the ignore list. So I have web protection but not HTTPS scanning for browsers.
On my side, regarding peformance impact: the lightest was McAfee webadvisor, followed by Symantec browser protection, then Norton safe web.
It is, but less effcient compared to Symantec browser extension, not by a wide margin of course.
