Hey @I Walk MY Way,

Haha, alright, I'll bite and try to play devil's advocate here since you're asking to be talked out of dropping that cash on Avast Premium. I've been around the security scene for a while, and while Avast isn't the worst out there, it's got some baggage that might make you pause before committing to a 3-year sub for 10 devices (that's a hefty investment, no doubt). I'll keep this factual based on user reports and known issues—no wild speculation.

First off, on the positive side: Avast does a solid job with real-time protection, and their Premium Security bundle includes extras like a firewall, ransomware shield, and webcam protection. It's user-friendly, especially for multi-device setups like yours (phones and PCs). If you're already trialing it and liking the interface, that's a win.

But here's where the "horror tales" come in—nothing apocalyptic, but common gripes from forums like this one and Reddit:

  • Performance Hits and Bloat: A lot of users report it slowing down systems, especially older PCs or during scans. It's not as lightweight as something like Windows Defender (which is free and built-in on Windows). On Android, I've seen complaints about battery drain and intrusive notifications.
  • Pop-Ups and Upsells: Even in the paid version, Avast loves to nudge you toward more add-ons or upgrades. It's like that friend who won't stop selling you on their side hustle—annoying over time.
  • Privacy Scares: Back in 2020, Avast got caught in a scandal where their subsidiary (Jumpshot) was selling user data to third parties. They shut it down after the backlash, and they've claimed to clean up their act with better privacy policies, but it left a bad taste for many. If data privacy is a big deal for you, this might be a red flag.
  • Customer Support Woes: Tales of long wait times, unhelpful reps, and billing issues aren't uncommon. One user here on MT shared a story about getting double-charged on a renewal and fighting for weeks to sort it—yikes.
  • Detection Rates Aren't Always Top-Tier: Independent tests (like AV-Test or AV-Comparatives) show Avast is decent, but it sometimes lags behind leaders like Bitdefender or Norton in zero-day threat detection. If you're dealing with high-risk stuff, that could matter.

If you're set on paid multi-device protection, maybe check out alternatives before pulling the trigger:
- Bitdefender Total Security: Often praised for better performance, fewer annoyances, and strong privacy features. Their multi-device plans are competitive.
- ESET NOD32: Super lightweight and effective, with good Android support.
- Or stick with free options like Malwarebytes (for on-demand scans) paired with built-in defenses—might save you that subscription dough if your needs aren't super advanced.

Ultimately, if Avast is working well in your trial and fits your budget, go for it—no security suite is perfect. But yeah, those points might give you second thoughts. What specifically drew you to Avast? Maybe we can brainstorm better fits.

Cheers!

Choose security measures that align with your comfort level and are effective across your various uses and devices. It's crucial to remember that no systems offers a 100% guarantee, and relying on any one of them exclusively isn't recommended. Ultimately, strong security habits will be your most reliable defense.

Having been on and off the BD forum for years and having used it on and off for years, I would say something other than Bitdefender (my personal opinion, contrary to a post above).

And since you were asking about Avast in particular, and anything to consider regarding it, I've been using the free version on a laptop for a week now without any issues.
I don't get the pop ups to upgrade, only when I run the Smart Scan of upgrades I could get, but I just click past those and am good to go. I do get a notification at the top of the UI (red dot) of a "present" I could unwrap.

In the General Notification settings I disabled Offers, Personal Privacy I disabled Personalized discounts, and Pop Up Notification Treatment set it to Limited Mode. It's been very quiet so far, and again, this is the free version but it's only been a week.

I haven't had any PC performance issues. Even though Avast uses its browser certificate, I don't notice any slow downs during web surfing. So far no horror stories with the free version. I posted my laptop specs below. On another laptop that has lower specs, I'm running Eset Premium for it and its VPN's lower system (RAM) impact.

You could also surf their forum to see if there are any consistent issues or concerns there.

I thought his was a good post:

But why Avast Premium?

Frankly, I'd go with AVG Internet Security - 10 devices/2yrs. $27 Same great protection, less bloat & from a trusted source.

And they are so close to if not spot on security wise, why not consider AVG with its possibly better UI? But, IIRC, I like Avast right-click system tray options better than when I had used AVG (more helpful options with Avast).

You stacked the licenses of 3+1 making it 4 years.
Did you stack it thru email/call support or via your account portal?
