I have to go out now, will return in a few hours. If turning SONAR off doesn't work, we will use a different program.

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from here to your desktop.
  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • When it prompts you to try their 30-day trail, click decline
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is Checked (ticked) except items in the C:\System Volume Information folder and click on Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. please copy and paste the log into your next reply
    • If you accidently close it, the log file is saved here and will be named like this:
    • C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\mbam-log-date (time).txt

When I clicked setup in Malwarebytes a popup appeared and asked "action on Adwcleaner so I clicked search and there you go. going to install Malwarebytes now.

Looks like you are clean! Are you having any other problems with your PC? If not,

Judging from your logs, if you are no longer experiencing any other issues, your PC is clean!

Double click on OTL to run it
  • Click on the Cleanup button at the top.
  • You will be asked to reboot the machine to finish the Cleanup process. Choose Yes
  • This will remove itself and other tools we may have used.

Also, open adwCleaner and click Uninstall


Now that your PC is clean, I recommend you to create a new System Restore point then purge the old ones after.

For XP
How to create a Restore Point in XP
Delete all restore points except the most recent one

For Vista
Create a restore point
Delete all but the most recent restore point

For Windows 7
Create a restore point
Delete all but the most recent restore point - Click the Delete all but the most recent restore point link

Judging from your logs, if you are no longer experiencing any other issues, your PC is clean!

Double click on OTL to run it
  • Click on the Cleanup button at the top.
  • You will be asked to reboot the machine to finish the Cleanup process. Choose Yes
  • This will remove itself and other tools we may have used.

Also, open adwCleaner and click Uninstall


Now that your PC is clean, I recommend you to create a new System Restore point then purge the old ones after.

For XP
How to create a Restore Point in XP
Delete all restore points except the most recent one

For Vista
Create a restore point
Delete all but the most recent restore point

For Windows 7
Create a restore point
Delete all but the most recent restore point - Click the Delete all but the most recent restore point link



Keep your system updated
  • Keeping your programs (especially Adobe and Java products) updated is essential. Update Checker will notify you if any of your programs require an update.
  • Microsoft releases patches for Windows and Office products regularly to patch up Windows and Office product bugs and vulnerabilities.
  • Please ensure you update your system regularly and have automatic updates on. You can learn how to turn Automatic Updates on here

Much thanks I will be more diligent in the future, I guess I was spoiled using my imac and then going back to pc and getting lazy. will log out now and if nothing else type at you next month. I appreciate the hard work. I may need a reminder around the twenty-first for pay-pal don't hesitate to drop an e-mail. Hello Fiery, Question, my subscription to Norton 360 is up in five days after three years, Auto-renew Used by Norton Three times in two weeks and their fix was to give me 800 days free and extra storage offline, the fact is I don't trust them and was thinking of Kaspersky. What's your view on K. any thing more thorough, I'm sure you have a unique idea of my computer habits after helping me with my infection problem which seems fine now. If you can find the time I would appreciate it. Thank you in advance, Ron

Hi Ron,

No antivirus will protect you from all the viruses out there, the best antivirus detection rate, depending on the reviews, are around 95-98%. You can find product reviews on PC Mag or AV comparative.

That being said, my recommendation is always free software like Comodo Internet Security , however, it is for advance users and difficult to use. It will catch every installation or modification by a new program (even the good ones) so you will have to manually allow each installation and deny the bad ones. The pop ups can be very technical and confusing to read, however.

Other free antivirus I recommend include:


In addition to your antivirus, you need additional protection such as a firewall and behavioural blocker.


Other steps that you may want to do to further protect your system/files:
  • Sandboxie - "Quarantines" your browser so anything that you do in it will be isolated from your system.

Sandboxie is highly recommended because when you get infected, the virus is contained in the sandbox, which is isolated from your actual system. When you exit the sandbox, everything inside will be deleted, as well as the virus. Just remember to bring the good files you downloaded out of the sandbox so they won't get deleted when you close the sandbox. Comodo Internet Security has this feature as well, along with a "host intrusion prevention system" to catch all modification to your system and any viruses missed by the antivirus.

Kaspersky is a full security suite but it slows down your computer dramatically. Unless you have a lot of memory and a good processor on your PC, I wouldn't use it.

Fiery, I am running a I7 -2.8 gig quad core with 8gig of ram and need something user friendly, I only use this computer for pleasure use only. Do you think Kaspersky would suit my needs or just go with the freeware?

I think your PC can handle Kaspersky, give it try if you wish :)

Kaspersky is a decent program.

Thank you for the response, I downloaded Sandboxie and like it in theory anyway, avast i'm having a problem with it not installing, I disabled norton but I think it may be in Sandboxie, I'll work at it somemore.

Having more than 1 antivirus installed will cause system conflicts and decrease stability. I recommend you to uninstall Norton first before installing Avast.
