If you have less than 8 GB RAM, you should definitely upgrade it ASAP (it's not expensive). If you have 8 GB or more, then you shouldn't care about it at all.

Not many people know, but Windows since version 10 has smart and efficient memory management. You might see it use a lot of RAM though this isn't really the case. The OS just reserved the memory to prevent apps misbehaving. If an app needs more memory to operate, Windows will gladly release it.
I have 8 GB.

Absolutely not, just for browsing and text communication, and office work from time to time.
See... no need to "save RAM". Web browsing, text communication and office work isn't resource intensive. You could easily do that with 4 GB RAM without any issues. Unless you start using more RAM, you pretty much wasted money on these 8 GB as you aren't using the memory to its full potential.

RAM is volatile memory. That means it only holds data temporary, when there's power. The moment power is lost, all the data that was loaded into RAM is lost without ability to recover. It's specifically made for this purpose; for data that you absolutely need in the moment. Unlike SSDs, RAM doesn't have limited number of writings before it goes bad and you can "write" data unlimited times on it.

This is exactly the reason why you shouldn't worry about RAM being used. The more RAM is used by apps, the faster everything will be because there isn't a need to constantly pull the data from drive. The more RAM you have, the more apps, browser tabs, extensions you'll be able to have opened simultaneously.

Ever wondered why your PC starts immediately when waking up from sleep? Because everything is loaded in the RAM and Windows doesn't have to pull data from drive again. Sleep mode essentially means all the components are turned off except RAM which keeps the state your PC was before going to sleep.

Feel free to fact check this with AI. I tried summoning @Bot but it doesn't want to respond to me. 🥲

Right @Bot?
That is true, but opening large number of tabs can consume a large percentage of RAM; I try to keep as much as possible of RAM for browser to avoid consuming most of it to the extent of system freeze.
Facebook, months ago, had issue causing memory leak with RAM consumption more than 90%, but it is fixed now.

Let me know how you get on with Ghostery. I'm curious.
Up till now, it is great; efficient as the old uBlock origin, with the same amount of RAM usage or even less.
I think I will ditch uBlock origin for Ghostery.
Thank you for your kind advice 🤝

From what I understand, your fear of using RAM comes from memory leak, right?

You shouldn't worry about that either. Why? Memory leak can only get as much memory as it's free; it can't simply steal memory that's used by another app. So if Firefox uses 85% of your RAM, and there's misbehaving app, it can only use remaining 15%, can't use more than that. It will slow down other apps forcing them to use page file, but it's worth to keep in mind modern operating systems have smart memory management which recognizes misbehaving apps before they do any real damage.

And the solution for memory leak? Just close and launch the app again. Unless there's a bug in the app, it shouldn't happen again.

It took advantage of the new RAM limiter of Edge and set a limit to avoid memory leak.

Are you happy with the Ghostery extension? I'm still a bit torn between Ghostery and uBlock Origin Lite... 😅
Reverted back to uBlock origin lite few hours ago; Ghostery is great, similar to uBlock origin (not the lite version), but it is locked (cannot select or deselect lists) and its CPU usage is higher than uBlock origin lite, also RAM usage is higher but it is similar to uBlock origin (old).

exactly ghostery sucks

exactly ghostery sucks
I had to try to get sure it sucks 😁
I believe in the rule that following the majority of people is the safest choice, regardless of being convinced about their choice at the beginning; most people say uBO lite, then it is uBO lite.
