I don't see this an issue. If you have a good SSD, it will take years before it dies. Just make regular backups and do not overthink it.
He got two issues here. 500MB might seem small, but for his Country/Location they have Monthly Data Limit and after that it throttles to almost Dial Up speed. Those updates accumulates easily.

Another thing is the SSD write.

BD does not download 500 MB worth of update. What he meant was when BD downloads an update, it rewrites the whole database again on the disk.

Where did you get that from? That's false. In fact, Bitdefender consumes less hard drive than Eset, since it loads its definitions in ram with PHOTON tecnology.
I really want to like BD, but my tests showed that it writes about 20 gigabytes within 2-3 hours after installation, and I can't give it a chance to improve itself for my machine in this case.

Bitdefender is amazing; it do both, write half a gig on disk with each update (the downloaded size is small, but it creates a backup for the whole database with every update), and load database in RAM to consume the largest fraction after the browser.

fountain? I find it unlikely that AV creates a copy of its entire database every time it updates.
