Yes, I use a virtual machine when testing malware. As for the CIS settings, I just leave them on the defaults. Never had any problems with them before and in my review of the product this was more than enough.

Make sure you change the sandbox level to restricted or untrusted. Otherwise you could be susceptible to ransomware.

Totally agree, my opinion would be to change it to untrusted just to be safe.
