20 years of How-To Geek. It is hard to believe, but our publication first launched in 2006, covering technology that looks almost prehistoric compared to the current landscape. Today, it's a new world of AI agents and vibe coding. When HTG started out, iPhones weren't even announced. Heck, Windows Vista wasn't even out yet.

The first Wayback Machine snapshot of the site is from November 28, 2006. The first post on the page is "Format a String as Currency in C#". Sorry kiddos, we were still talking about C# back then since Objective-C on iOS and Java on Android weren't happening yet.

You'll find Windows Vista posts there too, but based on a release candidate, since the OS wasn't out yet.

When "the How-To Geek" launched, there was one clear goal: help others with their technology. Well before the times of getting quick answers from Google's AI Mode, if you needed to know how to run a Microsoft Excel formula or fix an unknown error on Windows, you had to dig through technical documentation written for engineers. We wanted to fix that, and based on early traffic, readers appreciated the help.

But you don't have to take our word from it. How-To Geek's founder, Lowell Heddings, published a recap of the site's first year back in 2007.
