A small addition, because no one writes about it. Bitdefender has ATD and its protection is not based mainly on signatures. It is not Eset.
You can extend the life of the SSD by setting it in the settings so that it does not update the signature database every 1 hour. You can change it, for example, every 3 hours or every 6 hours. Or whatever you prefer.
In my case, it usually updates right after turning on the computer and possibly for the next update ;) I have it set to every 3 hours for today.
Yes, that's one way to reduce the disk writes. Bitdefender check for updates every hour but don't have update available every hour. So usually there are 3-4 hours or even more gap anyway. ESET release signatures every 4 hours on average and they also have streaming/pico updates which downloads a 1/2KB file every 10 mins.
Avast has the best updating mechanism of all products with their constant streaming update every minute/two. So, the system is always up to date.
BTW, regarding BD vs ESET disk writes. I checked again and ESET's disk writes is not far behind Bitdefender's. It at least writes 380-420 MB on each update. Even more than that as their startup scan after every update also cause some disk writes but this one is dependent on what files your system has and what it scans. But ESET's updating process is 10 times faster than BD.

Sure, it checks but doesn't download. But BD is different. Since I've had it, it can download updates once every 6 hours and sometimes every 2 hours and sometimes every 1 hour. Now I've set it to 3 hours.
Eset is similar. It asks every 1 hour and can also download every hour and sometimes only 2 times during the whole day.

WOW. So BD is defending it a bit. We criticized it a bit, but as you can see, it's not the only one who does this. I didn't notice it. Apart from the fact that my free space fluctuated a lot. Now I don't have it with BD. It is almost not noticeable.(you can only see when BD downloads the database)
Which doesn't change the fact that Eset asks every hour and can download every hour. You can set it in BD.
Anyway, BD supposedly takes up so much RAM (more when idle than Eset during scanning) but there is no difference in the operation of the computer at all. I feel the same when working on the computer as with the "light" Eset. On the other hand... pages as I wrote (browsing the internet goes just as fast) in both cases, but when it comes to reacting to "bad pages" I have to admit that Eset was a bit faster.

Exactly... Why does BD take so long to update? As you can see, the amount of data is similar to Eset. Eset does it instantly and in the case of BD you can go and make yourself a coffee ;)

What is streaming/Pico updates? Used ESET/Avast but no signature updates downloads for ESET every 10 min with 1/2 KB file size. It receive updates every 1 hour from booting time. 1st update after boot then every hour. Avast also update hourly and not confirm for Kaspersky however it use KSN to receive update every few minutes randomly.

By default, setting in Kaspersky means every 2 hours, but You can set up manually to every 1 hour:

BD is more irregular with signature updates especially in the last couple of years. But ESET updates are not irregular. The lowest number of updates they would release in a day is 4. Never 2 unless something is wrong with servers, or some other maintenance is going on. ESET officially publishes time and date of their every signature update release. It is available on their website. 5-6 times a day is their average. They need signatures more than Bitdefender and Kaspersky because of their signature dependency.
Avira release updates the most. 8-10 times every day.

No one will see it unless they know where to look.
ESET's pico updates are located at: "C:\ProgramData\ESET\ESET Security\pico\1"
Avast's streaming updates are located at: "C:\Program Files\AVAST Software\Avast\defs".
Normal database folder will be named something like, "25041004" and the streaming updates folder will be like, "25041004_stream".

Therefore, it is enough to set the BD query every 6 hours, for example, and we will no longer have to worry about downloading and cloning another 0.5GB of data to the disk ;)

Do you know where BD saves? Do they hide it?

I think it's somewhere in C:\ProgramData\CommonFiles....I don't remember the exact location at the moment. So check in the CommonFiles folder. There are folders where you won't have the permission to enter. Windows Explorer cannot even show the size of the folder. That's where they store it.
