Serious Discussion Do You Think WinRAR Have Any Benefits Over 7-Zip?

I wasn't being serious, though it was a decade at least as I remember :)
LOL...thank goodness, you had me there for a second...55 years? 😂 😂

WinRAR came out in 1995. So 29 years ago, but like the user above, it feels like 100 years ago in computer terms. I used WinRAR until Windows 10 came out and then I switched to 7-ZIP.
After reading his post, out of curiosity I did check on Wikipedia, just to find out the past history about it. I didn't realize the development of it went as far back as it did.
  • Command line RAR and UNRAR were first released in autumn 1993.[8]
  • Early development version WinRAR 1.54b was released in 1995.

He's a time traveler, I'm an alien, perfectly normal people in this forum :)

I've been using Powerarchiver for so long I almost forget there are others out there... nice UI, multithreaded compression/decompression, etc. And they actually honor their lifetime licenses, I've been using it for nearly a decade.

Regarding the original question the UI is the main diferencial. It's easier for most people to set up options in a nice UI to get the most compression than remembering the full syntax of a command line.

Benefits no, but it’s certainly annoying with its constant purchase nag. I only use 7Z.
I remember many users ago I was downloading the patched version from torrent sites because of the purchase annoyance 😄 Back then the patch was just a registry file I think 🤔 But then I discovered 7zip and didn't need WinRAR anymore. Now I have both 7zip and NanaZip (which is based on 7zip) installed because of the latter's dark theme and Windows 11 context menu integration. Also, I set NanaZip to keep Mark of the Web for extracted files and 7zip is set not to. I found a use case for both (y)
