Advice Request Does anyone know what happened to Zemana?

Please provide comments and solutions that are helpful to the author of this topic.
Just was curious to know what happened to the company. It used to be great and I am their lifetime subscriber. There have been no posts by Zemana on their Facebook page since 20 June 2021

Does anyone here have any update?
Zemana had financial problems for many years. The original Turkish owners sold it to a Bosnian company 5 or 6 years ago. I don't think the Bosnian owner was able to turn Zemana around.

Abandonware.

All their other products have been discontinued.

Only Anti-Malware and Anti-Logger executables are still available for download, however it is unknown as to any recent updates.

My best advice is to forget about them, as they have done with you.

The website is still operational. Here is their About Us:

The developers were like a flash in the pan here a few years ago --very very active and lots of shmoozing. Then suddenly, everyone from there dropped out of site and abruptly stopped communicating. It was the weirdest thing. To this day, I don't understand it. It's like something imploded there or something.

But they seem to be around, just very muted. About two years ago, I submitted a false detection (MSI Afterburner) to them. I get this bot-generated email that refers to me by my email address, not my name. It said they'd get back to me in 72 hours but never did. Three months later, it was still "detecting" the same Afterburner .exe.

I only use it to check what how it's doing, not because I take it seriously. I feel terrible for saying that but it was just so weird, this whole episode with them. If you want to use the antimalware, you have to make sure Core Isolation/Memory Integrity is toggled to OFF in Defender's UI. Otherwise, the SDK won't install.

I can't recall the 'brand names' but soon after Zemana seemed to go into a bunker the front end of the Antimalware was cloned by a number of other 'brands'. I'm in a bit of a hurry right now and a quick search doesn't bring up any examples of these clones. I think that others here may recall these cloned versions.

As mentioned above the Zemana Antimalware is still available from lots of places for download, I can't vouch for which are genuine. Scan the .exe at Virus Total if tempted to use for safety reasons.

I see no reason to not use it as a second opinion like its suggested at Fosshub - "Zemana AntiMalware Free is a formidable “on-demand” malware scanner. Though this malware scanner does not offer real-time protection, it is still capable of identifying and removing nasty code that threatens the functionality of your computer. It might be useful as a second opinion scanner just in case you suspect an infection."

There's iolo Malware Killer and STOPzilla AntiMalware. Both of which are rebrands of Zemana, rather than being clones. There also was MalwareFox AntiMalware, but that's been discontinued and they now promote TotalAV.

I don't recommend v3 of Zemana as it has issues with false positives. Both Malware Killer and STOPZilla AntiMalware, are still based on v2 of Zemana, but neither provide a free version.

Mostly abandoned it seems after issues within the company it seems, I gave up on them a couple of years ago, they did not fix anything that I reported after they abandoned things.

RIP Zemana, they should inform their users of their situation, so that they can move to a better product that is still active to protect their computers.

It is no longer a good idea to use their products in my opinion, this test is just one example of this:

Imo, there are better scanners out there. I see in the above video of goodjohnjr, Zemana missed all ten ransomware samples. That's even worse than I expected and worse than Super Antispyware's result (which was pretty bad).

Like Norton Power Eraser, for eg. If you submit a true false-positive via its portal, it is addressed within 24-48 hours. Period. And Norton's this huge kraken of a corporation but they've done right by me so far. Then there's Zemana which acknowledges your request and that's it.

I mean, use what you prefer, if you make an informed decision. But I'll stick with what I have (NPE, HitmanPro, AdwCleaner).

An addendum and something I hate to confess but will anyway. I used to run Super Antispyware like years ago and it was a good product. But then more recently, I read the poor reviews, esp. over at Wilders but didn't think much of it.

OK, so out of cuirosity, I d/l SAS--the Professional 14 day trial version. and then shut off Defender's real time protection because it will snag that Eicar test file pronto. So I installed this but didn't pay much attention as I thought it hadn't changed at all in five years. WRONG. Pay attention, plat!

This thing installed a PUP and I didn't catch it. What was it? Google Chrome. OK, so lesson learned. Here are results. Amid all that clutter (mucho cookies cuz I ran Firefox outside Sandboxie for this nonsense) is the one true finding of the Eicar file. Yay. Don't think I'll try this again anytime soon, though.

Same logic can be applied for people who continue to use an outdated and vulnerable Win XP and Win 7 OS. Why? It doesn't make sense, there are better solutions out there. Zemana is dead, and to be honest it wasn't very good in the first place. Do as plat said, use NPE, HP, ADWC or at least something that has been updated recently.

Yeah, I am currently using: Sophos Scan & Clean (set to scan on start up using Windows Task Scheduler), HitmanPro (Free) (for its Context Menu Scan, because Sophos Scan & Clean lacks that, and Early Warning Detection Scan because Sophos Scan & Clean lacks that too), Norton Power Eraser (NPE), sometimes Malwarebytes AdwCleaner, and sometimes Malwarebytes Free.

I used to use it briefly years ago until Malwarebytes came out, it became clear to me that Malwarebytes was better, and that SuperAntiSpyware would likely fail to evolve and improve for the modern era.

I agree with you that the options which you list are far better than Zemana antimalware, or products based on it, now.

As a few blasts from the past have been mentioned here recently, here is another - herdProtect. BTW SAS was good in its day.

So Malwarefox has already thrown in the towel, it was not so long ago they released a Beta version that they announced here on the board.
They where going to do a new fresh start with a "new" Malwarefox.

No, that's Watchdog. But their antimalware product started out as a Zemana rebrand.

Clam AntiVirus (ClamAV) was another one that I had hopes for back in the day.
