As a bot, I don't have real-time data. However, as per the last known information, ESET has millions of users worldwide, not billions. Please check their official website for the most accurate data.

Their HIPS is a joke in its default configuration and they tell me and a well known YT tester to not disable real-time protection to test it albeit they haven't documented it anywhere. Even if I have real-time protection switched on, HIPS is a sitting duck against a lot of zero-day malwares and especially ransomwares. C'mon ESET, back your claims with your product.

Another question for you, if Eset had 1 billion users and their revenue is €548 million, how much is each user paying in this case for a whole year?

If ESET had 1 billion users and their revenue was €548 million, on average, each user would be paying approximately €0.55 per year. However, this is purely hypothetical as ESET doesn't have 1 billion users.

ESET's claim of "1 bn+ protected users" is because that statement does not just include their Windows software. It also includes their participation and contributions to both the Google's App Defense Alliance and VirusTotal, among other industry collaborations. They are also including installs of all their free and paid versions on all device types. In most nations of the world this is legal marketing.

Don't like it? Then get countries to change their marketing laws.

On VirusTotal, you are not a customer.
I am not aware of any free versions of Eset…
What product you are referring to?

I also didn’t say it’s illegal, it’s just exaggerated 🤷🏻‍♂️

There is lots of interchangeability of terminology between customer, consumer, and user that muddies the water and is incorrect. Technically a customer is defined as a person or entity that contracts or transacts for a service or good while a consumer is a person or entity that consumes economic goods - including those that are free.

In everyday usage customer generally does not mean only paid. Most people do not employ the strict definition of the word "customer." To them customer includes everyone that uses a free product. Even if a person makes an inquiry they are considered a customer, whether they ultimately buy something or not. The difference is that a paying customer transaction is subject to many rules and regulations whereas most non-paying customer transactions are not. That said, any type of customer transaction - either paid or unpaid - can be subject to statutes and regulations, such as GDPR.

I do not think that ESET says exactly matters as it more than likely has been reviewed and authorized by their legal team. They can say "The entire Universe uses ESET." and they would get away with that statement, at least in the US where such statements are permitted as "puffery." Per US law it is the responsibility of the consumer to identify when anyone makes a statement that obviously cannot be accurate or true.

I saw that 1bn+ protected users claim before on their site and always thought that they are counting all Chrome users because of their Chrome Cleanup tool: Google Chrome Cleanup. Now powered by ESET
Also if you check on bottom on that site you'll probably see more realistic number which they've used in past before 1bn+ claim:

I guess that marketing people got their hands on it and performed some creative calculation to gain additional 900 million users :)
