New Update F-Secure beta version updates

F-Secure is still a good option for the non-techy/non-enthusiast. The other one is Bitdefender. Both are appealing for those demographics mostly due to little exposure of settings with high automation.

Full automation for the masses or full default-deny for the masses. Never allow them to make a decision. They ain't good at it and inclined to make the wrong decisions.

The best thing for security would be for Microsoft to force the use of SUA, but this goes against all current dinosaur thinking. Windows allowing the Administrator account always by default is the face of stupidity. Sorry users that want to use stuff. You are the problem. ALWAYS.

Windows s like security should definitely be default and software should adjust oh and the minority that actually needs admin rights should still be able to grant it (maybe under some hidden option in settings)

With the right config windows can make anti malware a dinosaur technology as by default it will be as secure as an Xbox hopefully

Release 25.6 beta 3 (6.4.189)

Bug fixes:

  • Device Protection uninstallation reliability
  • Fixed network filtering driver issue on product uninstall/reinstall or system reboot (PBL-14915).
Improvements:

  • More precise error message shown when restore from quarantine fails

Out of pure interest, I removed my AV cleaned this PC up & did a 'No AV' image- For fun I installed the latest version of F-Secure as I still have a licence for it & it seems fine.

I like what F-Secure offers (and doesn't in bloat or unnecessary frill modules) along with Glasswire free, is still my favorite combination.

A rusty bicycle still works. So does a rusty knife. And a rusty gun.

Long live Iron Oxide!

Gotta have something to do in Lapland, especially when there's a German digital takeover at the instigation of the local natives who are selling themselves out.

As a curiosity, I read rumors that Mikko Hyppönen had left WithSecure. And indeed, after 34 years...
Hyppönen announced in June 2025 that he would retire from WithSecure after a 34-year tenure to become Chief Research Officer and part-owner at Sensofusion, a Finnish company specializing in anti-drone technologies.
This is a huge loss, and this ship is unfortunately sinking...

This is a huge loss, and this ship is unfortunately sinking...
When senior executives and companies announce changes in leadership, what is stated is usually spin and probably not the real reason for the change(s). In other words, not the truth.

Drones are at the forefront of warfare strategies & tactics. That said, anti-drone protections and technologies are currently a very high market demand capability. Current warfare is still boots on the ground and cyber & economic warfare. The future is drone and robot warfare to replace the hooman soldiers. With high demand, and the fact that it is defense industry, Sensofusion should see high profit margins, but that remains to be seen. It is still a nascent micro-company. So I can see why Mikko would find the move to Sensofusion appealing. Working within the global defense industry has its perks. Developing cutting edge technologies that saves lives. One would assume that Mikko is going to earn bank at Sensofusion.

Are F-Secure and WithSecure sinking ships? Well if they are their taking on water began under Mikko Hyppönen's leadership. The evidence shows F-Secure's and DataFellows troubles began a long time ago . Both, while respected for decent products and good execution, have faced increasing pressure within the market. Neither has ever achieved great business success. Hence the de-merger of F-Secure and WithSecure into two separate companies that still are essentially one company in terms of codebase and operational cooperation. In my estimation, within the past year I see moves to integrate with GenDigital. A security software publisher does not drop its own solid technology to purchase another publisher's services/modules except for one reason - primarily reduction in expenses. F-Secure's and WithSecure's adoption of Avira technologies are probably cost cutting measures to reduce personnel and backend overhead and costs. Perhaps even more - setting the stage to be purchased by GenDigital at some point. It is almost as if GenDigital is in the preliminary stages of buying out and absorbing F-Secure (and perhaps WithSecure). I am not confident that both F-Secure and WithSecure are profitable enough for GenDigital to be interested. GenDigital could be assisting both to turn things around. WithSecure has operated in a deficit since the split with F-Secure.
Mikko, as we all know, is extremely smart. What smart person does not jump off a sinking ship - or the smartest thing to do - jump ship and get to another ship before the big dunk?

Both F-Secure and WithSecure are extremely stingy about sharing infos with its userbase. Support definitely will not provide any infos when a customer has regulatory compliance requirements that require risk management about the products - which means the companies need to share product infos with the clients to perform the risk assessments. I've noticed that both have become much less transparent. Usually... that is indicator that changes are coming. My impression is that both companies are hiding lots of negative financial realities. What exactly the changes shall be is anyone's guess.

F-Secure is doing financially better than WithSecure.

Buying 1,000 shares of FSECURE.HE is probably not the worst investing risk gamble that one could make. GenDigital or other security software industry marauder with deep pockets can gobble up both and turn them both around to decent profitability.

Bug fixes:

  • Device Protection license may fail to get updated when expired (PBL-15044)

Release 25.9 beta 1 (6.6.175)

  • No external account linking required
  • Direct local user management
  • Predefined filtering profiles

VPN websites bypass:
Specific websites or domains can be set to bypass VPN tunnel. After adding website to bypass list, browser may need to be restarted in order to get change effective due caching. Also bypass does not work if DNS over HTTPS is enabled.

Bug fixes:

  • VPN killswitch blocks DHCP IP renewal (PBL-14985)
Known issues:

  • Help content is not yet updated to talk about Family Protection feature
  • If license expires, Family Protection still shows active in user interface and allows changing settings, however these are not enforced
  • Automatic VPN protection feature may cause VPN to get in stuck state where it can be only recovered by rebooting device or restarting fsvpnextsvc service

Release 25.9 beta 2 (6.6.203)

Improvements:

  • “Firewall sensor” of Device Protection has been enabled for improved accuracy of real-time protection. The firewall sensor can be disabled in Settings in case it causes problems in some environments.
  • Setting up Family Protection will immediately elevate the settings UI
Bug fixes:

  • Safe search enabled when family rules are off (PBL-15194)
  • "Illegal downloads" category blocking is not working (PBL-15195)
Known issues:

  • VPN connections of updated product not working. Should get fixed automatically by next beta update.

FWIW, v25.9 was released. The desktop PC I still have Total on hasn't updated yet, I'm still on 25.8. But it is mentioned that you can disable the Firewall sensor if it causes issues?

Version 25.9

Released October 2025

Family Protection replaces Family Rules

Family Protection introduces simplified local management of content filtering. Users with administrator accounts can now apply predefined profiles to all system users without having to link F-Secure accounts. Time limits are removed to streamline the user experience.

Other improvements:

  • Added firewall sensor for Device Protection. It is on by default but can be turned off from settings if it causes problems.

Bug fixes:

  • VPN killswitch blocks DHCP IP renewal
  • Automatic VPN protection broke VPN functionality in some systems
  • Wrong notifications suggesting C: drive to be scanned

A lot of the updates recently have been focusing on the VPN, which has worked very well on my end. But I tend to agree with these two posts by @bazang it's more sprinkles on top of the vanilla ice cream.

Just another FYI for the 1-2 members besides myself (on a couple of my PC's) who may still be using F-Secure :) It did update this morning to v25.9 which included the Firewall Sensor. I could ask for more information on the English forum, but I'm pretty sure they will not respond.

They did respond :) :) Here is the quote from this post by Ville, who does a nice job on the forum, regarding the Firewall sensor :)

We don't want to reveal exact mechanics of the protection to keep it harder for malicious actors to investigate them. It increases the accuracy of real-time protection by monitoring network requests.

This was already enabled in 25.2 but caused problems like bluescreens and DNS issues and was subsequently disabled in 25.6 (listed in 25.6 release notes in bug fixes). It is now fixed and re-enabled but we added a separate setting in case someone still runs into problems with it.

Yep, I agree :) I didn't realize it was incorporated into the first v25.2 release :) Maybe to try help make up for or help with Deepguard's underwhelming replacement, Behavior Protection/Avira Sentry?
Definitely. In an architecture of engines, changing one engine is a very big deal (much bigger than what people think). It introduces duplicates in detection and protection and significant gaps from vectors not covered.

F-Secure (if they wanna stay relevant) will need to work very hard for over a year to be able to close the gaps this switch has introduced.
