Mozilla to release Firefox 79.0 for Windows, Mac, and Linux on Jul 28 with new features and improvements. The update improves the privacy for all users by blocking unwanted first-party cookies out of the box.

The latest Firefox includes version 2.0 of Enhanced Tracking Protection (ETP) that automatically protects users from unwanted first-party cookies.
In other words, Firefox clears cookies and site data from tracking sites (from the Disconnect list) daily.

Firefox 79 update includes security fixes as well below mentioned bug fixes.
  • Several crashes while using a screen reader were fixed, including a frequently encountered crash when using the JAWS screen reader.
  • Firefox Developer Tools received significant fixes allowing screen reader users to benefit from some of the tools that were previously inaccessible.
  • SVG title and desc elements (labels and descriptions) are now correctly exposed to assistive technology products such as screen readers.

With the release of Firefox 79 last week, Mozilla silently added a new feature to Enhanced Tracking Protection (ETP) -- Firefox's internal component that blocks invasive user-tracking techniques.

According to Mozilla, Firefox 79 can now block a new technique called "redirect tracking."

Online advertisers and web analytics companies have recently begun adopting this new technique after Firefox, Chrome, Brave, and other browsers have recently included privacy protections inside their code to block user tracking and user fingerprinting scripts.

More specifically, this technique was developed to circumvent browsers that prevent advertisers from using third-party cookies to track users.

Quote from above link

FIREFOX TO CLEAR COOKIES FOR AD TECH COMPANIES EACH DAY

Mozilla says that going forward, it plans to clear first-party cookies every 24 hours for all known advertisers as a way to prevent redirect tracking. This way, even if advertisers employ redirect tracking, users will have a brand new identity each day, preventing companies from linking previous activity to a unique user profile.

The browser maker said this new protection is included in Enhanced Tracking Protection 2.0, the next iteration of its ETP feature. While currently only active for Firefox 79 users, Mozilla said ETP 2.0 would eventually roll out to all users within the next few weeks.

However, Mozilla says that blocking redirect tracking won't be active for all known ad tech companies.

"Sometimes trackers do more than just track; trackers may also offer services you engage with, such as a search engine or social network," Mozilla said, hinting at companies like Google, Microsoft, Facebook, or Twitter.

"If Firefox cleared cookies for these services we'd end up logging you out of your email or social network every day," it said.

For these sites, Mozilla said it would clear cookies every 45 days.

24 hrs is a long time. The longer you keep a site open the more cookies will be deposited and the more you'll be tracked.

Should be using Cookie AutoDelete, Site Bleacher or Forget Me Not etc extensions to immediately clear cookies when the tab/window is closed or upon cookie creation. Whitelist only those cookies you want for signing in to sites.

Alternatively, run in Private Browsing Mode or Incoginto Mode to clear cookies upon tab/windows closure but you'll need to sign in each time you visit a site which requires log-in. A bit of a hassle but safer.

Also, use Skip Redirect extension to prevent sites from redirecting.

Below is the link to test for Redirection. If it pass you'll see the below screenshot. I tested it in Ungoogled Chromium

One of the boxes has something to do with IDN redirection. So testing might not be 100% workable even with the settings in Ungoogled Chromium. You'll need IDN Safe extension to block IDN redirection as shown below

Go to Settings => Security & Privacy => Site Settings and enabled Blocked Pop-ups and redirects.

Anyone can get it to pass the test with the two(2) prefs settings in FF 79?

privacy.purge_trackers.enabled to TRUE
network.cookie.cookieBehavior to 4
