New Update Firefox Stable Release

I have noticed one "new thing" updating firefox recently, logged in as sua when I relaunch firefox to finalize the update, I get admin popup warning (I forget its name) and it requires me to input admin pw to update firefox. other software that is already installed does not require admin pw for version updates. Wondering if this is a firefox only issue or maybe I tweaked something in system settings that is causing this, but then I would expect to see it with every app version update.

not intentionally that I recall, but I will look into what you suggest, sounds reasonable...
EDIT update > I looked in settings | general | updates = [enabled] automatically install updates (recommended) > [enabled] when firefox is not running.
so if that is the only switch for this, then it should be installing the updates, correct? this is on win10
EDIT2 update2 > looked at Services and it is DISABLED > I have no recollection of going into services and resetting its properties to disabled. curious... and even more curious both stopped and disabled and it is totally grayed out, ie, no obvious way to start it. I am running DeepInstinct av, maybe that's what disabled it. If I did this manually, normally I would have notes, so now I have to search mynotes...
EDIT3 I uninstalled Thunderbird in mid-June, I'm thinking that STOPPED/DISABLED this service. I guess I have to uninstall firefox and reinstall it.

You don't need to reinstall Firefox, you can run the Mozilla Maintenance Service installer via this file "maintenanceservice_installer.exe" in the Firefox program folder, you can run it to update Mozilla Maintenance Service to the latest version too.

thanks, but already uninstalled Mozilla Maintenance Service, then uninstalled firefox, DL'd new firefox_installer, and firefox seems ok but there's not yet any newer update to test it with. I am 99% sure that uninstalling Thunderbird borked the maintenance service. But question: now the new service properties show STOPPED & MANUAL. I was expecting to see the service running & automatic. Would someone with working firefox updater post the settings of their maintenance service properties. I tried to start it manually and got a popup, no-no, so not 100% sure it is fixed...

EDIT update: I asked chatGPT about startup type & status and it thinks the default post install should be automatic (delayed) & running. When I try to tweak in service properties I got popup: Windows could not start the Mozilla Maintenance Service service (sic) on Local Computer Error 1: incorrect function.

Your setup is correct, it is STOPPED because no need to always run in background, and it is MANUAL because it will be run by Firefox itself when needed.

Mozilla released the Firefox 131.0.3 update yesterday to patch some security issues. The change log for the update mentions that the update "fixes an issue where the List all tabs button was not able to be moved from the toolbar." Sure, it was "a bug". Currently on a break of Firefox due to a new bug that I've noticed since last week: Excessive Windows DWM usage when screen is locked and display enters standby

Once your display enters standby (either by lock screen or after the inactivity timer goes off), Firefox causes Window's dwm.exe to enter some sort of loop causing high energy consumption, higher CPU power state, and heat. You can only spot this bug by monitoring CPU activity after the display enters standby, meaning you will only spot it after the fact. The moment you wake your computer up it goes back to normal, so you most likely won't notice it.

On my desktop it's not a huge problem, although it's a bad bug to have. On my laptop, however, it drains the battery quickly and makes a lot of noise/heat while the screen is off. At first, I imagined it was some crypto miner that had infected both my machines.

Looking at Firefox 132.0 RC release notes one part looks particularly interesting...

Firefox might finally get ability to stream 4K content on Netflix and Edge won't be the only one capable of 4K.
