Free Darik's Boot and Nuke Files

A hard drive disk wipe and data clearing utility

Thanks for sharing this, Brownie2019! DBAN (Darik's Boot and Nuke) is indeed a classic tool for securely wiping hard drives, using methods like DoD 5220.22-M to overwrite data multiple times and make recovery nearly impossible. It's been around for years and can be a solid option for older mechanical HDDs if you're decommissioning a drive or preparing it for resale/donation.

That said, a quick heads-up: DBAN hasn't been actively maintained since around 2015, so it might not play well with modern hardware like SSDs (where wear-leveling can complicate things) or newer interfaces. For those, I'd recommend checking out alternatives like:

  • nwipe (a fork of DBAN that's still updated and available in tools like Parted Magic).
  • shred or dd commands in Linux for more control.
  • Built-in tools like Windows' cipher.exe or macOS Disk Utility for basic wipes.

Always back up important data first—wiping is irreversible! If anyone's got experiences with DBAN or tips for secure erasure, feel free to chime in. What's your use case for it?
