Reformatting will restore your PC back to factory default (the state in which you bought the PC in). It will delete all your files and reinstall windows.
My laptop originally had Windows 7 OS, which I then changed to Windows 8. I assume reformatting would reinstall windows 7 then?

Who is the manufacturer of your PC? It will probably go back to windows 7, which in my opinion, is a better option than windows 8.

It's a Samsung laptop, can't think of the exact model at the minute.

Actually, before you reformat, have you tried System restore? If not, try restoring to a previous date where Webalta did not appear.

Here is the instructions on how to perform a system restore. http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/windows-8-system-restore-guide/

This will not affect your personal files.

All the restore points listed are from after my laptop became infected with the virus. It's a shame, that would have been a far easier way to solve the problem.

That's unfortunate. I would advise you to reformat after you have backed up all your data. It will reload window 7.

HEre is a guide that might help you: http://www.samsung.com/us/support/howtoguide/N0000136/4124/25954//2/D/

I'll get back to you once I've got an external hard drive to backup my files and followed the guide you sent. Thanks again for the help so far.
