I'm only basic computer savy and have just bought a new laptop and am getting flooded with add popups which is driving me crazy so i've decided to join here and hope i can get answers to my many questions on how to block them.

Which is the best free add blocker to use

Hey there :) Now that depends, are you talking about ads on the web or are you getting pop-ups when you're not even surfing? Big difference in problem and tools to fix it. For the web, you'll get opinions all day long. AdBlockPlus is the "king" of the adblockers as far as how well and long it's known. To be 100% honest with you, it's all in the lists. Every one of them basically uses the same lists like Fanboy/Easylist, with some specialized ones. The list depends on your preference and needs. It would do us little good to tell you what is "best" for your own experience.

Answers regarding to your questions:

1) In adblockers, simple or complex filters can manage to block ads from the sites you always visit, the only differ is PTC sites which lots of ads can bypass from those adblockers.

2) Advertisements are simply occupied on those borders on the website you visit with animations promoting products while pop ups are appeared without your consent to show forcely the ads.
