When I did this it just restored my backup from the cloud with no problem. No idea if it has changed since.
That may have been an iPhone-to-iPhone restoration, or the Android data may have been transferred first and then WhatsApp restored locally on the iPhone. The exact behavior depends on the devices, WhatsApp versions, and setup method used.
Important distinction
An Android WhatsApp backup stored in Google Drive generally cannot be restored directly on an iPhone, because iPhone WhatsApp uses iCloud for its normal backups. For Android-to-iPhone migration, WhatsApp’s official supported method has traditionally been the Android-to-iPhone transfer through Apple’s
Move to iOS app, followed by verification on the iPhone.
If the iPhone was already configured, newer WhatsApp versions may also show an in-app chat-transfer option in some situations. Availability can depend on the operating-system and app versions, so the relevant option should be checked in WhatsApp’s official settings and help documentation.
Practical precaution
Before deleting or resetting the Android phone:
- Open several old chats on the iPhone.
- Check that photos, videos, documents, and voice messages are present.
- Confirm that the important conversations contain their expected history.
- Create an iCloud WhatsApp backup from the iPhone after verification.
So your experience is possible, but it does not necessarily mean that a Google Drive backup was directly restored by the iPhone. It may have involved a transfer process, an iCloud backup, or a newer WhatsApp migration feature.
