Compared to Windows 7 and 8.1, is Windows 10 Pro a more secure OS overall and why?

Please elaborate on your reasons why (ex: security features, more streamlined updates, Windows Defender ...etc). I understand the enterprise edition may have more features, so I'll keep this poll geared towards the more widely available PRO version.

With exit plans in place for 7 and 8.1 (8 is discontinued), 10 is the most secure as it is the only one on M$ radar right now. Anything else will be obsolete once support ends for them.

The integrated Windows Defender is improving more and more. Furthermore desktop apps, like Chrome, can make use of AppContainer as sandboxing system.

I think "About the same" :)

I don't see why Windows 7 is less secure then Windows 10 or even Windows 8 (or 8.1).

Windows 10 so far implemented a good security not just on the built in OS but on its connection to hardware. Of course because of its enhancements then vulnerabilities reduce.

I term of security , Windows 10 OWN previous versions because: (some are only available for pro or enterprise versions)

- Secure Boot
- Patchguard (kernel mode protection on x64 )
- Appcontainer (Windows built-in sandboxing)
- Device Guard
- Windows Hello (biometric system)
- Windows passport
- Windows store (trusted apps)
- Hyper-V
- Smartscreen (system wide on Win8/10)
- Windows Defender
- Windows Firewall

etc, etc, etc...

@Umbra, quick question. Does Edge run in a "sandbox" by default or is more secure than a sandbox? :D

Do you feel as if Windows will one day become much more immune to malware such as OSX is? In other words, how much longer will we need to depend on third party security applications aside from built-in Windows security apps to protect us?

El Capitan uses rootless protection now to protect system files from critical infection ...etc.

I feel as if sometimes Antivirus programs were just a bandaid for a flawed OS. Now that Microsoft is moving along well, someday third party Antivirus apps may become unnecessary. It seems to be feeling more that way everyday now.

Note: I have noticed an enormous decrease in malware infections on my client's computers since 2 years ago (Windows 8.1+). I rarely clean PCs infections anymore. To be honest, the majority of the removals were mainly PUAs. That is the original reason I posted this poll to see how far Windows has come along in bullet proofing its OS.

Where did this reduction of PUA/Malware that I've noticed come from? Was it from Edge, Chrome, Adblockers, better spam filtering from major email companies? Did Google become more aggressive with bad ADs? Is it because we don't use Java/Flash much anymore? Was it Windows 8.1+? Was it a combination?

It could , the problem is the users ! Win8/10 afford already many security improvements , but i see on this forum and several others; many users don't even bother using the basics of security their OS offers, they think they are experienced enough to discard them.
MS pushed bad habits on the users with their previous OSes , for example, using an admin account instead of a restricted account during Windows installation. (linux doesn't)

it will be soon, if you have the chance to use Win10 Enterprise you won't need any security softwares.
I will tell you , my system (Win10 home) can be run without any 3rd security apps , not because i use my common sense , but because i use all features available and added some personal tweaks; all those deny most of the common infections vectors.

Yes me too, since system-wide Smartscreen and Windows Defender were implemented , serious infections are less frequent; most of those i encountered were due to "happy clickers" or people using admin accounts without UAC, etc...
