Between those two, I'll go Kaspersky over Avast! due to the same reason as what @Shran mentioned in his post above.

If you are open to another option/ suggestion:
1) Emsisoft IS - Considerably Light, install and forget, good BB.
2) CIS - Free, needs heavy tweaking but offer similar, equivalent protections level
3) Norton - Light, good detection, install and forget, SONAR.

In terms of maturity, we can see that Kaspersksy established the overall protection mechanism on suite that contains major effective component, sometimes a lot of features tends to be helpful but not a practical idea where resources and optimization needs an overhaul changes.

Example is the Application Control which already a plan B when you properly tweak to make things work flawlessly.

Avast IS definitely generous on the features to make it balance but still that concept may not increase the overall protection rate rather prevention as much as possible where tweaks and user dependent to provide decision like HIPS and properly tweak the exceptions for Hardened Mode.

They are both good within interesting features to provide at, its definitely a user preferences and practicality to purchase license.

I'll go with Kaspersky. It is more advanced, with interactive mode and some more tweaking you can a great defense.

IMO, it all comes down to what you want in a security software and some self-testing. Without using yourself, seeing how the security suite runs on your system, how convenient you find it or how easily you can use it, and it has all the features that you were looking for. Try it yourself...
