Hi, I changed the password yesterday and have worked without problems in IE since. I'll check in tonight after another few hours in IE. As soon as I moved from IE to Firefox (accidentally) last night, I got redirected,

I thinks this issue is only happening in Firefox..........

Open Firefox and Goto Tools ..> Addons then Disable all add ones over there.........

Removed. They were pretty simple add-ons. Only three. There was one from Trend Micro Security that was disabled because it was not compatible with the current Firefox version. I have a pic of that if you want to see, Kuttus. I was unable to remove it because it was disabled. All others I "removed."

Kuttus, since I got home from work, I have been working in IE, with no redirects. Stay tuned. BTW, how do I give you a "kudos"? I searched on it and couldn't find.

I am not sure what to do about Firefox. Would uninstalling and reinstalling help?

Cheers! Here's hoping...

We have to remove Firefox Completely then.... :)

If you don't have any Bookmarks IN Mozilla Firefox only do this steps... If there is a Book Marks we need to take a back up for it First.....

Go to Control Panel -- > Programs and Features and Uninstall Firefox from there.

After that reboot your computer.

Now go to

  1. c:\Program Files
  2. c:\Program Files X86\
  3. c:\Program Data
  4. C:\Users\admin\App data\Local
  5. C:\Users\admin\App data\Roming

and delete the folder Mozilla Firefox and Firefox.

Now restart the computer once more and re install Firefox..... Now check how it is working now.

Hi, I cannot find the files you have named above. I did uninstall the Firefox application. I deleted the Firefox file. There are no Firefox files remaining. I was not able to find a folder for admin\app data\local. Nor was I able to find Roaming or Roming.

I have not yet re-installed Firefox. Will later.

The STRANGEST thing happened when I rebooted after uninstalling Firefox. I lost my keyboard. Really bizarre. I had to reboot twice. Only the hard reboot brought it back. I called my local PC guy, who couldn't believe it. Crazy!

Hi, yes, I exported them to HTML. I think the keyboard thing was totally freaky. Should have been totally unrelated.

I am getting ready to reinstall Firefox. Keep your fingers crossed!

Huttus, here is something I think is weird. I just reinstalled Firefox. How would a totally "clean" file know my most visited sites? Could there be something I didn't wipe out when I uninstalled it and deleted files?

Oops, sorry! Typo!! Kuttus. You can tell I'm tired when I've had a 14-hour day already. :)

Step -1
Open My Computer
Please select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
After the new window appears select the View tab.
Put a checkmark in the checkbox labeled Display the contents of system folders.
Under the Hidden files and folders section select the radio button labeled Show hidden files and folders.
Remove the checkmark from the checkbox labeled Hide file extensions for known file types.
Remove the checkmark from the checkbox labeled Hide protected operating system files.
After this please press the Apply button and then the OK

Step -2

Go to Control Panel -- > Programs and Features and Uninstall Firefox from there.

After that reboot your computer.

Now go to

  1. c:\Program Files
  2. c:\Program Files X86\
  3. c:\Program Data
  4. C:\Users\admin\App data\Local
  5. C:\Users\admin\App data\Roming

and delete the folder Mozilla Firefox and Firefox.

Now restart the computer once more and re install Firefox..... Now check how it is working now.

I haven't done that last step because I have been three days without a redirect! Stay tuned. If I go another 2-3, then it will be pretty clear that uninstalling Firefox and reinstalling it removed the malware code. Thank you!

I will be back to report again soon.

Hi Kuttus,

I've gone days without a redirect. I am sure all our other steps helped clean up my computer, which had more malware on it (e.g., Medfos), but the final step, uninstalling and re-installing Firefox, did the trick. I am so very pleased. Thank you for your help and patience. It seems I'm in the clear.

Best,
Charlestongirl

Great to hear that it is working fine....... :)

Double click on OTL to run it
  • Click on the Cleanup button at the top.
  • You will be asked to reboot the machine to finish the Cleanup process. Choose Yes
  • This will remove itself and other tools we may have used.

Now that your PC is clean, I recommend you to create a new System Restore point then purge the old ones after.

For XP
How to create a Restore Point in XP
Delete all restore points except the most recent one

For Vista
Create a restore point
Delete all but the most recent restore point

For Windows 7
Create a restore point
Delete all but the most recent restore point - Click the Delete all but the most recent restore point link

Keep your system updated
  • Keeping your programs (especially Adobe and Java products) updated is essential. Update Checker will notify you if any of your programs require an update.
  • Microsoft releases patches for Windows and Office products regularly to patch up Windows and Office product bugs and vulnerabilities.
  • Please ensure you update your system regularly and have automatic updates on. You can learn how to turn Automatic Updates on here

I also recommend you to switch your antivirus program to a better one. Here are some suggestions:

In addition to your antivirus, you need additional protection such as a firewall and behavioural blocker.

Here are only a few suggestions that will improve your system security. Should you wish to allow us to make full recommendations and set your PC up with maximum security, please start a thread here. Our community of PC enthusiasts and experts will give you feedback and help you secure your system from future malware infections.

Internet Explorer may be the most popular browser but it's definitely not the most secure browser. Consider using other browsers with addition add-ons to safeguard your system while browsing the internet.

Firefox is a more secure, faster browser than Internet Explorer. Firefox contains less vulnerabilities, reducing the risk of drive-by downloads. In addition, you can add the following add-ons to increase security.
  • KeyScramber - Encrypts your keystrokes to protect you against keyloggers that steals personal & banking information
  • AdBlock - Disable/blocks advertisements on websites so you won't accidentally click on a malicious ad.
  • NoScript - Disables Flash & Java contents to avoid exploits or drive-by attacks
  • Web of Trust - Shows the website rating by other users and blocks dangerous and poor-rated sites

Google Chrome is another good browser that is faster and more secure than Internet Explorer by having a sandbox feature. Additionally, you can add the following add-on to Chrome to heighten security.

Lastly, it is important to perform system maintenance on a regular basis. Here are a few tools and on-demand scanners that you should keep & use every 1-2 weeks to keep your system healthy.

Other than that, stay safe out there! If you have any other questions or concerns, feel free to ask :)

Thank you so much! Curious why you don't care for Trend Micro Security. It certainly failed me. Thanks for the tool recommendations.

I've been told my DSL modem is my firewall. No?

I made a small donation to thank you. I wish it could have been more!

Best,
C-girl

Trend Micro Security is also good one... :)

Firewall setup inside the DSL modem will not be that much efficient one. I think we have to manually configure some settings in it.

Once again thank you for the Donation.
