Linux and Mac OS Are Fastest-Growing Operating Systems

Microsoft may still dominate the operating system market, but Linux and Apple's Mac OS platforms were the fastest-growing in 2010, according to new data from Gartner.

Worldwide operating system revenue totaled $30.4 billion in 2010, Gartner reported Wednesday, representing an increase of 7.8 percent from 2009. Within that overall market, Microsoft still claims the leading position, with a 78.6 percent market share.

What's particularly interesting, though, is the rapid growth being shown by both Linux and Macs in the server and client operating system segments, respectively.

In the future Linux and Mac might beat Microsoft but let's see how it will goes.
 
Yes and its useful in Linux OS based, but as far I know not all programs in exe can run well using Wine.

Though WINE's use as an application layer allows much more native use of Windows applications on Linux based operating systems, which makes it the closest thing to perfect currently available.
 
Windows have it all, the most users using it, more softwares and other features which run great in Windows.

but for OLD machine.. use ubuntu will run better than windows OS :p
and.. i still use windows now and maybe use ubuntu on another machine

many apps are paid.. just few is free but not useful :)
apple just for rich people.. and have lot money to buying software with expensive :p
 
Agree, Itunes is a few of the application which is free in Mac and Windows.
 
the good thing about apple's OS is that you can install any linux program; since it's linux-based OS you can theoretically install all application that are made for linux. how it is in real life is another story.

but.. my opinion.. windows OS apps.. are better than mac osx :p

my fav is windows OS then ubuntu (linux OS) then last is mac osx :)
 
Mac OS X is not based on Linux but on UNIX. A lot of software that runs on Linux was ported to Mac OS X.

Depending on one's needs you may find out that better hardware + Linux + CrossOver Pro (commercial wine based product that allows people to run various Windows games and applications) may be better than Windows license + cheaper hardware.

About putting Linux on old machines. That is fine if you have a use for those, else they will just gather dust. If you want to test Linux setup a dual boot and try to replicate stuff you do in Windows on Linux. Switching OSes is not something that should be done over night.
