Source: Microsoft plans big Windows 10 UI refresh in 2021 codenamed ‘Sun Valley'

Microsoft is planning to update many top-level user interfaces such as the Start menu, Action Center, and even File Explorer, with refreshed modern designs, better animations, and new features.

This UI project is codenamed "Sun Valley" internally and is expected to ship as part of the Windows 10 "Cobalt" release scheduled for the holiday 2021 season. Internal documentation describes the project as "reinvigorating" and modernizing the Windows desktop experience to keep up with customer expectation in a world driven by other modern and lightweight platforms.

They haven't even finished integrating the Fluent Design UI to the entire system yet, not to mention even the Control Panel hasn't been fully ported to the Settings APP yet.

So another half baked project to make Windows as ugly as it can get, they need to focus and finish ongoing projects before moving on, this is a huge mess.

Quoted from OnMSFT.
The exec remained quite ambiguous about the future of Windows 10 earlier this year, but Bowden’s sources said to expect the following improvements:
  • A redesigned Start Menu and Action Center inspired by Microsoft’s work on Windows 10X.
  • The Taskbar could also be rewritten with modern code, with Microsoft increasing its use of the new WinUI user interface layer to improve the Windows Shell.
  • The legacy File Explorer, which hasn’t really evolved in recent years (except for the new dark mode) may get an improved user interface. Microsoft is also said to bring dark mode support to more legacy Windows components
  • Tablet users may be able to enjoy a more “fluid experience” with better animations.

Also, a user-made concept.

This update is also known as 'version 21H2' and it's currently scheduled to arrive in the second half of the year. Sun Valley will bring improvements to the File Explorer, Start Menu, Action Center, Taskbar, and other important elements of the OS.

Glad I use Stardock programs that gave improvements on bog standard MS offerings years ago - At moment Curtains, Start10 & Object Dock - All look nice with no issues with stability & increase usability.

Does ObjectDock run with no problems on Windows 10? Windows 10 is not listed in their system requirements.

It is true that on the site it's not Windows 10 approved, I've used it for years on 7 & 10 with no issues, actually I'll mail support & see what they say as on an Stardock email recently they were still recommending it - I'll report back (mailed them):rolleyes:

So using 20 years old computer the old control panel opens instantly, but using the best new computer and Settings takes ~2 secs to load. Amazing progress. :ROFLMAO:

I really want to see what Microsoft considers an interface update. It'll be hard to compete with the likes of Curtains or Blinds.

Also functionality like Stardock's Fences should be built-in in Windows, not a third party software.

State of the Windows: How many layers of UI inconsistencies are in Windows 10?

"Brilliant article talking about Windows 10's UI and detailing how inconsistent it is. Hopefully Sun Valley improves much of this"

They'll just keep adding bits and pieces of different designs, like they been doing for the past decade.
