WHHLight on default settings works optimally with Microsoft Defender (ConfigureDefender HIGH), FirewallHardening, and DocumentsAntiExploit. All tools support each other to maximally cover the attack surface at home.

If you disable Defender using custom tweaks/tools, the WDAC may stop working.
If you disable only Defender's real-time protection, most of the advanced ConfigureDefender settings will not work.
 
It is possible to test WHHLight default settings with Microsoft Defender on default settings with disabled real-time protection + FirewallHardening + DocumentsAntiExploit (MS Office and Acrobat Reader open documents by default).
Other Defender's settings (like Cloud Delivered Protection) must be enabled.
WHHLight in default settings requires additional protection against weaponized documents (such as DocumentsAntiExploit). Default settings highly restrict scripting attacks, but allow CmdLines with LOLBins (useful for system management). So, FirewallHardening is also required to restrict LOLBins.

Yes, disable Microsoft Defender. I don't want MD's protection, local or cloud, affecting the test.

I know an antivirus should complement the setup for well-rounded protection. The purpose of the test is not protection, for which I viewed your several @Andy Ful's Tools tests, but to see the strength of hardening + reputation.

I just want to see hardening + WDAC setup into effect.

Test:
WHHLight: Set SWH and WDAC to ON.
FirewallHardening: Add LOLBins.

And if the test system has MS Office or Adobe, add:
FirewallHardening: Add MS Office and Adobe Acrobat.
DocumentsAntiExploit: Set MS Office to ON1 for Current Users and to ON for All Users. Set Adobe Acrobat to ON for Current Users and to TL for All Users.

If anything, please let me know.

It did fairly well when @Shadowra tested it last July. It would be interesting to see if there have been any improvements since then.

I have always preferred ESET (fwiw). Use the one (or whatever) that runs best on your device(s).
 
Thanks. But that's not the point. I'd like to see which AV is currently the best. In the last test, Eset won against BD by a tiny margin. Was Eset lucky? We'll find out when we get the second test and whether Eset will win again ;)

If BD won in the second test, then according to the rule of third time's charm - there would be a third and last test ;)

so by "currently" you mean you'll be changing your AV every week or every day? AVC says they ran 7 tests in 2024. @Andy Ful has often opined you need to see true average over 2 years to see a true statistical differences (hope that's a correct paraphrase). You're right, I do not get the point of your posts.

Assign heads to Eset and tails to Bitdefender. Toss a coin every day exactly at midday. :)(y)

But seriously, due to the tiny (or no) difference between the scorings of those two AVs, you never get a satisfactory answer. :emoji_beer:

You don't understand my posts and you contradict yourself :) First you write that I will change every week and then you write that we have to wait 2 years? If you assume a different result and a different AV on the computer every week, then in 2 years it is already an abstraction :) 2 years in the IT industry is a period when a given product may no longer exist. The IT industry today is very fast at changes. And I would like to see if Eset's victory on this forum in January is not luck but a fact.
It is clear that it depends on samples etc. and that one day one AV wins and the next day another AV. I wrote the most advanced test to see the behavior of Eset and BD security mechanisms and not a specific final result. Eset and Bitdefender currently look like the best AVs but everyone has a different way to achieve it. For example, that BD makes a virtual machine from the computer. Eset does this in the cloud.
Every conscious user knows that there is no 100% safe antivirus.

I don't see the point of such a test, when the difference between the two products will be negligible and as you've noted, neither antivirus will give you 100% protection. So negligible that it's really not worth worrying about. Just use whichever one gives you no issues and doesn't cause slowdowns. Rather than being to concerned about having the absolute best protection, it's much better to always be very careful about what files you open, as this usually will significantly reduce the risk of infection.
 
I am not writing this request for a test just for myself. Each solution boasts about its technologies and that they are the best. What I am getting at is this... Since Eset and Bitdefender are the best or consider themselves to be such or so do users, it is great to test them in such a way that each user will see how their mechanisms work. One will be better in some cases, the other in others, because they base their security on slightly different assumptions and mechanisms. Then sum it all up and everyone will be aware of what they are choosing and not just rely on "legends". That is why it is great to see such a small battle between them in a test different than others, i.e. more advanced ;)
 
@Shadowra, Is it workable for you to test Kaspersky, Bitdefender, ESET, Microsoft Defender (ConfigureDefender "High"), and CyberLock (AutoPilot + Relaxed) the following way?

This would be a proactive protection test of the mentioned antivirus programs against the same samples, which should be unknown to them, for a fair comparison.

Can you gather at least 15-20 active/working malware of different types, all of which should be unknown (undetected with a right-click scan) to the mentioned antivirus programs? Execute the samples against each antivirus program's default settings for their proactive capabilities.
