Yeah thought so, so they have reneged on lifetime licenses they sold back in the day basically. Make it impossible to activate = win for them.

Thank you so much for taking the time to test those keys for me! It's sad to see Malwarebytes pulling these kinds of shady tactics on legacy users, but your test completely proved the point. You and the folks here just saved me from wasting money on a useless key from that Reddit seller. Truly appreciate your kindness and generosity anyway! This community is the best.

Not exactly... as long as you're the original purchaser and can provide them with supporting documentation they still honor the lifetime license.
If you have a legit lifetime license and can prove you purchased it they won't renege. However there are people who buy a lifetime license that is only allowed to be used for 1 computer and people were using it on multiple computers, when they try to activate it again after a period of inactivity it then Malwarebytes will not let get away with it again. In the past they were turning a blind eye to people who used a license on multiple computers, not any more. A legit lifetime license will always be honoured.
Yeah but how do you provide them with supporting documentation when it's a 15 year old online purchase? PayPal records and credit card records are long gone or archived.
I'm just not sure what they hope to achieve? May as well let people activate lifetime licenses as much as possible. I don't think they going gangbusters with new subs.
I'm sure how healthy their books are, but I can't imagine they are challenging CrowdStrike and co. May as well use the lifetimes for telemetry.

You're totally right that finding 15-year-old receipts is a nightmare, but you absolutely shouldn't let Malwarebytes get away with locking you out. I actually dug up this recent official thread, which outlines the method to reclaim legacy licenses and convert them to the modern format:
Regarding the long-lost financial logs—I actually have a friend who used to work at PayPal. I’m going to reach out to them and ask if there’s any back-end way to retrieve statement history from 15 years ago.
Even if things don't work out and you decide to keep the licenses for yourself, you are the legitimate owner and you deserve to get your lifetime access back from their support! Let's see if we can beat them at their own game. Truly appreciate your kindness anyway, mate!

I gave Mbam again a try a few weeks ago not overly impressed again, no longer using it.
