App Review McAfee: how bad is the worst antivirus?

It is advised to take all reviews with a grain of salt. In extreme cases some reviews use dramatization for entertainment purposes.

Trellix Endpoint Security underperformed versus SEP, but McAfee WebAdvisor excels, beating Norton Safe Web and Symantec browser protection tools.
But Trellix is now not really related to the home products, Trellix has access to all technology pre-acquisition, post-acquisition it’s all for the home software only, whilst both are using the same cloud.

SEP is time and battle tested for ages. Almost the same GUI for 15+ years. It got high reliability, efficacy and mostly consistent for Corporate Environments.
There are many products that have far surpassed SEP tbh. SEP is a good all-rounder but not without its caveats, mainly, everything has become an add-on (the Ryainair of cyber security).
SEP also hasn’t really kept up with emulation and so on like others have.

I like the analogy of the add-on as SEP becomes modular.

You're right there are other endpoints which are better than SEP nowadays. SEP reputation got tarnished when the sourcecode was leaked somewhere around 2012.

When I click the Open command on the McAfee icon in the taskbar, the program window appears, but it takes 53 seconds for the program window to actually fill with content. Is this the case for you too?

It takes an annoying time to load even in my i7 13th gen/SSD NVMe machine, but it is very modest in resources usage in the background, so it isn't a deal breaker.

3 or 4 seconds here, thars all - I recently installed it on a £220 UK Pounds Laptop & it seemed almost immediate too.
I think it can vary a lot from computer to computer. Taking into account that everyone here has a computer and laptop with different configurations. @Nightwalker has a 13th generation i7 machine with NVMe SSD and he also said that it takes a long time to open the McAfee GUI, it's annoying, I also confess that I didn't like it, but it's tolerable, taking into account that McAfee consumes almost no CPU and ram memory and also doesn't slow down browsing, it's worth it. ;)

It might be establishing some sort of connections with its servers before launching UI; it is the longest launch from task bar time I have ever seen.

Maybe the delay in GUI opening is a McAfee Feature and not a bug.... A feature that the competitors haven't implemented yet.hehe

I do have a 1 gig Ethernet connection on this PC & a Ryzen 5 5600X & 32 Gig Ram & 1 GIG NVME Samsung SSD for C:\ plus another 4 GIG SSD - But the laptop was quite low spec but that also was set up on a 1 Gig connection though wirelessly? Maybe some is to do with the internet speed?? I can try McAfee on another laptop & see what happens.

Yeah, the McAfee UI is definitely not gonna win a red dot design award, I am not madly in love with it either.

But on the plus side, it integrates quite a lot of services in a single console, it’s arranged well (you don’t need to be clicking and ticking around), and the language is kinda clean, no tech terms and jargons, perfect for deployment on computers of less tech-savy people.

I also like the alerts which don’t present “malware detected” with red colours, crosses, prompts to run deep/advanced scans and so on.

Trend Micro’s UI is without a doubt better looking.

Yes, exactly, that's what I thought. Since McAfee relies entirely on the cloud, it's a cloud-based AV, so perhaps this delay is due to some connection made to McAfee servers every time you open the GUI. Maybe that explains the delay in opening the graphical interface. (y)

Yes, that's true. @Trident showed that McAfee registered a lot of patents. :)

Yes, my registered and patented trademark. lol 😂

I was running McAfee on a PC with a 12th Gen Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-12700T 1.40 GHz processor, 16 GB RAM, and a 400 Mbps Wi-Fi connection. That should have been enough to open the program interface quickly.
However, I also had problems with a full scan of the SSD. After over an hour, only about 50% of the files had been scanned. The SSD contained about 111 GB of data.
I switched back to Emsisoft Business. ;)
