That picture was from a friend. She asked what to do with it. I do know that she uses Google Chrome as a browser.

I suppose Brave and other such browsers are "immune" for now :)

I get odd emails regarding adding renewals & the 'advantages' of auto-renewal, which I ignore so that's not an issue at all, at the end of the day I'm getting a first class AV for virtually nothing so for me that's OK. I've not had any popups with Internet security at all so far anyway. Getting a popup does not detract from the effectiveness of the system.

I've added a few of PC's I look after to McAfee so I'll keep an eye out for that as I don't want them going to Yahoo, I suppose for me the bottom line is a paid (free you take your chances) AV really shouldn't be doing such things as it just confuses the average user.

Same for me with TrendMicro, cheap works awesome. Im now running McAfee but Trend always has a soft spot for me.

I have McAfee Total protection, never have any popups or automatic renewal emails.
Bought cheap license, not with McAfee.

I've read a lot of horror stories about McAfee and problems with upselling, auto renewals and similar, so I agree that this is probably the best way to acquire license.
Buy it somewhere else for cheap and NEVER give McAfee your payment data.

I couldn't agree more. I won't give Norton or McAfee my payment details for automatic renewal. And I don't care what benefits they offer to lure me into giving them my details.

Not exactly, if you want to use Norton, even without auto renewal, the first thing they ask is you CC. You can delete afterwards. Somehow they want to see the CC. I do not like any company who does this. McAfee, no need just enter the serial number and done. Trend Micro never asks for any payment details either.

Like many other services (like spotify, netflix and hundreds of others), Norton wants to deal with legit customers that have valid method of payment and are ready to put their hands in their pockets and pay the needed amounts to use the service.

Norton has no interest in freeloaders that change their AVs on par with their underwear, and download Norton to execute 5 scripts before they uninstall it. They are interested in legitimate customers that are ready to try and commit.

Although licenses exist from third parties (luckily), this is the SaaS model.

Go and try subscribing to any service without providing a pre-authorised payment method.

  • Netflix here, no need
  • Trend Micro, no need
  • McAfee, no need
  • Bitwarden, no need
etc a lot of companies can do it, so why not Norton, right, data collection.

Trend Micro hasn’t adopted the service model yet, the product is not versionless. Bitwarden is hardly a service. McAfee yes, a bit easier than Norton on details.

But most of the services offering you a trial (even if it’s long trial like 3 months) require you to input your payment details. Some of them are highly unethical when it comes to cancellations and refunds, which Gen isn’t.

There is an underwear subscription from the Netherlands all over social media (subscribe, get free boxers and socks), they are so difficult with the cancellation, good thing I gave them a virtual one. They still try and charge it every night.

These are the services for you.

It’s a standard business practice to rely on the user that is too lazy to cancel and too lazy to ask for refund, for €9 a month. And the subscription just runs and runs.
How many people pay for the gym when they haven’t been to it for months…

Additional tricky methods from the service world: make subscribing easy. 2 clicks, to cancel the subscription, require discussing with chat support. Most of the users just drop the cancellation there and then and continue paying.

Norton at least gives you easy way to cancel so in the service world, it’s still classed as ethical.

Know what you mean, but as soon as they ask for my payment details, i skip the product when possible or use a disposable debit card from Revolut. One time payment and the card is invalid.

I agree with you that it's not difficult to cancel Norton. However, this is not the case with other companies. I speak from experience.
By the way, do you like the new Norton products?
Or is McAfee better for you?

I used to love the old Norton, but post-Avast, I don't like them one bit. There is just too much going on, too many tools, messy UI (slightly confusing even), way too crowded, many processes, the behavioral blocking one is always active. Definitely not for me.

Ever tried to test the V25 again to see if they are on par with McAfee and TM ?
