During an online event today, Microsoft announced several advances coming soon to OneDrive across various platforms. It also commingled the commercial and consumer versions of OneDrive, as it does. But I will focus on the consumer updates.
“At today’s OneDrive [event], we unveiled a powerful lineup of new features designed to help you work smarter, stay organized, and relive life’s best moments – all through the magic of AI,” Microsoft’s Jason Moore writes. “OneDrive is your gateway to seamlessly managing files, photos, and memories across work, home, and everywhere in between.”
Here’s what’s coming soon.
OneDrive search. OneDrive search on the web will be faster and more intuitive.
Third-generation OneDrive in File Explorer. Customers who access OneDrive through File Explorer in Windows–whether they want to or not–can look forward to colored folders that look impressive in both Light and Dark mode. This is rolling out today.
New OneDrive mobile app. OneDrive is getting a long overdue update on iPhone and Android, with a pretty new user interface that focuses on photos, enhanced photo search, more memory creation, and simpler sharing. There’s also a new File Import feature so you can import photos, videos, and documents from Google Drive, Google Photos, and Dropbox.
New storage tiers. OneDrive will soon add new 5 TB and 10 TB storage tier options, going beyond the current 2 TB limit in Microsoft 365 Personal and Family.
